i had my local sewing shop cut a hole in my liner so i
could use it as a true poncho..this is used on canoe trips
in the evening when i want to sit outside without a fire or
in my shelter sitting in a camp chair..any one who has tryed
to wrap up in a blanket or one of these slippery liners knows
how hard it is to keep on--it also comes in handy in the
mornings when you drag out of the tent half dressed or need
get up on a cool nite to relieve yourself..under a rain poncho
i assume it would keep you warm but i have never tryed that.
and--no--the hole does not keep it from being used as a
blanket..if its cold enought to have it around me in a sleeping
bag it;s doubled over or in the bag with me...however..if i was
to do this again i would have the cut out bit held in the back
with a strip of uncut materal or have a hood made up for it..

Great idea.
You could add a zipper on it, and 'zip it closed' for when you need it for a blanket.

peace.

OBG--i had a look at that kit..very clever and about time.
the liner has been around since the late 60's but thats first
i've seen of a way to make it more than a blanket..i have not
looked thru catalogs like BQ in awhile--too much "wannbe" stuff....i still wish i had a jacket made up when i was in Korea.
a poncho and liner and a field jacket and not all that much Won
and you could get a great coat made.

When I was a kid I would modify scout blankets by cutting a T shape into the middle to turn them into a poncho (or a liner that could be worn under the poncho liner). Having it open like that was never an issue unless I was using it by itself to cover up with. Later I discovered Velco. That particular type of blanket stuck to Velco...like...well Velcro!

Treat it with any of the good DWR, Durable Water Repellents, or plain old silicone and it will roll off a considerable amount of water but still breath. Handy if you use the poncho itself as a tarp and need step out from under cover for a short time.
