Hi there,

Can anybody give me any information of the Buck Specail, esSpecailly how it would perform as a "survival knife"?

Does this knife give good bang for the Buck?

Is this something that, with proper care, I could be using years from now?

Puns aside, I am serious.

Thanks.

I do not own a Special, but my largest knife is a Buck Personal (Mod #105) which I have carried, when appropriate, for thirty years. It has worked quite well for me, and I have done a fair amount of hacking around with it on archeological projects.

I personally favor smaller knives for outdoors carry, and I am sure I am in the minority, but I would carry something tough, but smaller, and use the weight saved for other critical items. As always, a lot depends on the situations you are preparing for, and the other tools you are carrying.

I have no connection with Buck other than as a satisfied customer.

I think it is this one with the 6" blade, blood groove and all (go to Tom's link and search on Special)

I got this knife for my 12th Christmas....long ago. I used it as a hunting knife for many years and it stood up to all kinds of kid abuse, which is saying something.

It was certainly well made, but an absolute bear to sharpen. The semi-hollow ground blade made it nearly impossible for me to sharpen. Even today after many knives sharpened I still cannot get this with an edge profile that suits me.

I still have it but have not used it in 30+ years. For the money I would not buy this one again but go for a Becker C/U 7 or the like.

It's a great knife, but like Schwert recommended, I'd go with a Becker C/U 7 instead. If you decide you want the Buck Special, I have a brand new one I will sell you for $40 shipped. I got it as a present, and it's just sitting here...

Right you are! I just knew it was a word that started with "P." I get confused so easily these days...Thank heaven the "105" is engraved on the blade.

I've used the Buck Pathfinder 105 over about 20 years. I've been satisfied with it, however I would probably select something else today.
