Just a quick post to let you guys know about some useful things I picked up at a 99 cent store today.

  • 3 pcs of Thread Seal Tape - used for threads of my flashlights
  • 1 small Hacksaw w/ extra blade - Blades to be used with Mag block
  • 10 trick birthday candles - used in fire making kit
  • 4 pack of bic lighters - used in fire making kit
  • 2 boxes of kitchen matches - used in fire making kit

Sure it's not top quality stuff but if I damage or misplace any of it, it doesn't matter it only cost one greenback. I'm sure a few here will do like I used to do & turn up your noses, but if you go into one just once, you'll wonder how you managed to live with out them before grin .

Have you used thread tape on flashlights before? Just curious

Some flashlights rely upon the continuity of the treads to make a complete circuit and it is possible the thread tape would prevent contact. In fact many flashlights benefit from using a grease/lubricant on the threads that conducts electricity.

Yeah I've used it on an old right angle flashlight, as well as on my Inova x5.It makes the x5 way easier to open & close being that the thread and cap are both metal. My guess is that the tape is protecting the thread from becoming bare as well as adding a little bit extra waterproofing...but I may be wrong. Any how they both work, no continuity problems.

Nighthiker,

You are right about the Dollar Store material being inexpensive, available, and some of decent quailty. Over the past 6 months I have produced 90 Personal Survival Kits for training Youth Groups, about 1/2 of the items were from Dollar Stores (e.g. LED lights, waterproof containers, zip-lock bags, fire-starter packets, duct tape, pencils, signal mirrors, needles/pins .....)

I'd never thought of using thread tape on flashlights before. I imagine it would depend on the flashlight, but how effective is it at getting a seal? Do you have difficulty getting the cap on and off with the tape intact? Or do you have to reseal the flashlight every time you change the batteries?

The thread tape on the flashligts, works well. I have no problem getting the cap on & off. The tape adheres pretty well, no need to reseal after battery changes.
