How to Make Lightweight Oilskin Tarps from Bed Sheets Interesting project. If I lived in hurricane country I'd make up a few of these just to have on hand.

Useful indeed, although I would prefer to use nylon/polyester webbing, or even paracord, for attachment points, rather than lamp wicks...

Interesting approach. Keep it away from the campfire, though.

Interesting, in the same way that learning how to wash your clothes on a washboard is interesting. But neither is very practical for most people. I think I'd just buy some waterproof tarps at the store and be done with it.

Ye gods! Interesting article but I'm afraid just clicking on the link might have landed me on some FBI/NSA watch list! shocked Just an FYI for anyone reading the link is to a real tinfoil-hat-type stuff.

Probably not, FBI has bigger fish to fry. I found it through a teaser article on PeakProsperity.com

Ah, interesting site. I'll have to poke around there a bit. Good find on the DIY oilcloth.

I'm curious/confused about boiled linseed vs. raw. I've read some suggestions that raw has more penetrating power (and more pungent power too), and it can be used to waterproof boots etc. But perhaps it doesn't cure (stays sticky)?

Any wisdom you guys can offer?

Doug, try this reference https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linseed_oil

More than you will ever want to know about flaxseed oil....

Thanks. Some day, knowing too much about flaxseed oil might come in handy. wink

Doug, maybe we can make a knife sheath out of a DIY oilskin tarp made from a bed sheet? smile

... which can be unrolled in the field to provide emergency shelter!

Now you're starting to think like me! (Careful, it's a slippery slope!) grin

Hem the tarp/bedsheet with small cordage which can be rewoven into a suitable gill net.....Some of the cordage can be fashioned into a bow drill for fire making. Shelter, food, and fire all in one!
