Preparedness = Peace of Mind

Preparedness = Peace of Mind - 01/21/14 04:21 AM

With little warning, we're expected to get hit tomorrow with what in the past has proven to be a crippling amount of snow for this region. When I heard this afternoon that the forecast accumulations had been increased, I was able to think through the checklist and say: "Just need to top off my gas tank."

Part of that is good fortune, happened to go to Costco last week. Even have fresh eggs, bacon, milk.... Camera batteries are even charged. the epitome of snow preparedness around here. Most of it is due to habits ingrained after years learning from ETS.

House is ready. Car is ready. This peace of mind is, for me, payoff enough for preparedness.

I hope everyone in the path of this will be able to enjoy the snowfall and not suffer any hardship or harm.

Be safe! Here in SD we're getting the cold but very little snow.

It took my wife a while to understand it -- she felt that being prepared was making me more anxious. Actually, she was the one who was anxious, as I was trying to educate her on the various potential issues that we were preparing for, and she hadn't thought about them much. Now she gets it, and we both derive a significant measure of peace of mind from being ready.

My time on ETS has really improved my thought processes. While our preps have improved its more about how much thought we put into what we do than how much money we spend.

it's been a 60 year learning curve on the hurricane supplies...this part of Florida has been pretty lucky, save for the 2004 season, where the Cat 3+ storm damage and power outages have been few...what you up there face in the cold without electricity yearly would be a daunting task... I thank God that Dad had the foresight to move down here in 1955... stay warm...forecast for high 20s here on Wednesday

It's probably worthwhile to give some credit to the increased precision and accuracy of weather forecasting now. But even with unpredictable events like earthquakes, preparedness brings peace...

Same here; nothing to do except go and top off the gas.

We've just got a few dustings of snow since the ice storm a few weeks ago, but it was -33C when I got to work this morning. BRR! Nice to be able to just check the list twice and top off the tank. Preparedness rocks!

Stay warm, dry and safe everyone!

"just need to top off my gas tank" How true, and a very good practice. In earthquake country, one is well advised to refill the tank anytime it gets to half full. When a significant shaker hits, you can count on the gasoline supply being disrupted for a significant period.

I am in earthquake & wildfire country and do just as hikermor recommended. Another reason to top off a gas tank prior to a major snowstorm (or hurricane) is to prevent/reduce condensation inside the fuel tank -- always a good idea.

Whenever someone talks about snow readiness, I'm reminded of a story in the local paper about 15 years ago. Snow was forecast, and this area goes to pooh when it rains, you can imagine snow.

On the front page of the local paper were two gentlemen who had gotten ready for the snow event. They had a case of beer, a couple/three bags of chips and two packs of cigarettes. They were ready they stated.

And don't you know, they are forecasting rain/snow/ice for this region. I think I'll avoid the panic crowd by staying home and sipping some hot chocolate.

Yeah JB, many are losing their minds again. I chose wine for this one. I did not cancel my scout meeting tonight either.
