Growing Winter Wild Edibles .... - 12/16/10 03:12 AM

I've recently taken up a new hobby, learning wild edibles! This is my list for my first order of California winter wild edibles, that I will plant in and around my garden and yard.

1) Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
2) Chervil: Great Green (Anthriscus cerefolium)
3) Chicory: Early Treviso (Chicorium intybus)
4) Chicory: Catalogna (Chicorium intybus)
5) Chickweed (Stellaria media)
6) Kale: Ruso-Siberian (Brassica napus)
7) Mustard: Japonica Purple Rapa Pop Mix (Brassica rapa)
8) Orach: Golden (Atriplex hortensis)
9) Orach: Green Velvet (Atriplex hortensis)
10) Orach: Magenta Magic (Atriplex hortensis)
11) Purslane: Golden (Portulaca oleracea sativa)
12) Purslane: Tall Green (Portulaca oleracea sativa)
13) Rutabaga: Joan (Brassica napus)
14) Sorrel: Garden Sorrel (Rumex acetosa)

If anyone can help me to add more winter wild edibles I could plant, please post anything that you are familiar with, or think would be a good addition.

I'm also working on a Spring, Summer and Fall Wild Edibles List. I'll start another thread for those topics later ....

How about Mallow? Just saw a nice patch yesterday.
Nettle-leaf Goosefoot is another one but I don't know much about it. Good luck.

Thanks! I've added Mallow to my list. Do you have Mallow growing? Is it a hardy cold weather plant? I'm in Zone8/14, Ceres, California.

Unfortunately we don't have any space for berries .... I would really like to have at least an acre of berries!

Prickly Pears grow all over town. I'm hoping that I can get some starts and plant them around our yard ... I have one rose plant. Hope to get more ...

I'm adding Plantain, Thistles, Yerba Santa and Sage to my list. Haven't been able to find anyone with Danelion seeds yet ...

I'm adding all of these to my list! Do you have these edibles growing in your yard/garden? Are they all cold weather plants?

Yes, all these are growing in my yard right now except for the henbit which is growing in a yard down the street from me. They are all "Houston Winter" plants, though the dollarweed does okay in the summer here, too.

Bountiful Gardens sells dandelion seeds along with a bunch of other "wild" edible plant seeds. I like them a lot (just a happy customer, no connection/renumeration).

Unfortunatley no, the gardeners keep mowing all the good weeds. But a neighbor has a nice patch growing and they seem to do very well in the cooler/wetter months so I assume it should grow okay even up where you're at.

Consider a couple mushroom logs or bags if you like mushrooms.
