If you had to walk a few miles for whatever reason which shoes hold up best on the black top?

I know some of my boots for the woods get worn out SUPER QUICK on the granite let alone black top or concrete.

I'd go with my walking trail shoes. Low-cut with a boot sole.

They'd last and would help my feet hold up.

Literally whatever fits. For me that's my trail shoes / hikers that I wear every day, and for most day hikes. Though I switch to comfortable Rockport Dressport dress shoes when I travel, and I walk in those often enough I daresay I could walk from work to home (7 miles) with reasonable comfort. They've taken me on multi-mile ambulations around London, Oslo, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and alot of US cities too.

I prefer Rockport boots, Brasher shoes or Clarks Originals Active Air GTX shoes and boots for smart casual urban wear. Rohan do some lightweight travel shoes as well.

All depends on what style you prefer.

Shoe and Boot manufacturers are always changing their product ranges except possibly Dr Martens Originals so if you find yourself a particularly attractively styled and comfortable boot or shoe it might be worth your while getting a few pairs especially if they are on sale.

95% of the time I leave the house I am in running shoes, or some kind of light hiker. The other 5% is a sandal or cowboy boot, which I keep a pair of bug out shoes in the car.

Look up "Patrol shoes" (lots of brands - find one that fits YOU) or any Postal Service approved shoe. They hold up, and can be good looking

I walk almost every day from 40th street and 8th ave to 25th street & 7th ave and back again in Rockports. Been doing that for years. They are great. 2.5 miles a day. No problems.

Rockports, if it hasn't already been stated, are owned by Reebok who puts their running shoe gel 'DMX' (?) and other running shoe technology into their dress shoes. It is a great feel.

I have found a few pairs of Red Wing shoes that have stood up well and are comfortable for walking. I have had the problem of very grippy soles on climbing boots wearing out on concrete because they achieve their grip by using a soft composition rubber.
I find the hiking boots that are hard enough in the soles to last on concrete are less than ideal for ice or the wet steel. It ends up being a compromise.
You might like to get in touch with a Red Wing dealer and check out some of the new composition soles.

Personally I like air-tac by ridge. Or just about any "combat boot" that's been designed for police/rescue services.

I've had *really* good luck with ECCO's. Very comfortable and durable.

Re: Urban Shoes - 07/19/09 07:43 PM

I've worn a number of different brands. Rockports were okay, for me they felt a little too light in weight, so I felt like I had on slippers. I used to wear rubber soled Johnston & Murphy and Timberland "split-toe" mocs for work. So long as the shoes fit well and had rubber soles, I felt like I could walk in them. If you wear any hard soles, keep a pair of rubber-soled shoes on hand, in case you have to walk out.

I walked from below Wall Street to almost Woodside Queens during the 2003 blackout in a pair of Timberland "work casual" shoes. I got a good blister, took acold shower, changed an headed back into Manhattan on foot.

Shoes are a REALLY personal thing. A few years back, my feet changed - grew in my 40s! Before that, I knew exactly what fit me, the socks I likes ets - I wanted a size 10.5 EE built on a Fairmont last - yes, I even knew what last fit me the best. What was amazing was that certain shoe stores (no, not chains) actually knew what lasts certain shoes were made on, and could say "try these"

After walking all over Copenhagen, as well as large portions of the Danish and Swedish countrysides, I can attest to Rockports being a shoe that is still comfortable after five or ten miles of walking. I can definitely say that is not the case with every shoe I have ever worn.
