Your privacy and Internet forums. - 02/24/06 09:55 PM

Bear in mind that what you post here is often picked up by Google and other search engines. Consider this when you discuss what you carry or keep, because even with an "alias" and "private messaging" your true identity can be discovered with minimal effort.

I choose to post "open" - as in my user name is my real name - Martin Focazio - but I advise anyone discussing anything that they'd rather not "broadcast" to consider the permanent record that's being built by this and most other forums.

This is not an invitation to debate the politics of this fact, it's a reaction to a set of posts I've seen in this section and others and a bit of advice from someone who has experienced the disturbing power of www.zabasearch.com, google.com and a9.com working together.

Well said, and one reason some would rather not reply too often.

Take Care, and Stay Safe.

Eh. Easily foiled.

For those worried about this:
 • Create a new user id, not at all related to anything you do. Random is good.
 • If you have to give an email address, go to one of the public email sites, create a "throw away" account, use that.
 • Do not use an "avatar" or picture to represent yourself (the link might lead back to you).
 • Do not put ANY information in your user profile.
 • Don't reveal information about yourself (location, job, interests, recent activities, etc).
 • Don't post any photos, unless you can do so using an anonymous photo hosting site.

The truly paranoid should go to a public place with free wifi when posting (your IP address could be used to find the internet account you posted from).

Oh, and if you're on several sites like this, pick completely different names for each. I've seen too many people have the same account on multiple boards. Bad idea.

I think that should translate "I wouldn't be so paranoid if they all weren't out to get me!"

Martin,
You are quite right. The thing is, if the posters aren't unhinged and just looking for information on self peservation or Survival info, as opposed to survivalist propaganda, they have nothing to worry about. I think particularly after the last spate of gulf hurricanes, the Govt. would love to have people that can take care of themselves. That's not to say there aren't paranoid branches of the govt. out there.

If you are open, we have a constitution that protects our rights.

But the phrase has it's elements of Truth. And as Kissinger said, -"Even paranoids have Enemies". Bronson said something like that too, -in the movie "Telefon". [color:"black"] Jackpine_Savage
