Earthquake in Baja - 04/04/10 09:57 PM
22:40 UTC, 15:40 PDT.
Mag. 6.9, south of Mexicali.
Ground here in San Diego rocked fairly strongly for at least 30 seconds.
I've felt a couple of aftershocks, very small.

The earth moved for me, too, here in Ventura. It was surely pretty rough at the epicenter, but that is a very thinly populated area.

I was on the sofa watching TV when it hit. No big jolt or big shaking. Felt more like my house was suddenly floating on the water for a while and it was quite significant. It's an odd sensation because it's almost so subtle that you keep wondering if the ground is still moving or whether it's just your own body's natural movements.

Yep, felt it in San Diego, but nothing to be alarmed about
here. We've had a number of shakers relatively near here within the last hour. Were those aftershocks or separate/distinct quakes?

A lot of fairly big red squares showing up on the usgs charts in the last few minutes - must be after shocks....

Don't aftershocks need to be on the same fault? Most seem to line up, but that
Magnitude 5.1 near Imperial, CA looks to be distinct.
Version #2 of the report apparently moved the quake from Imperial CA south to near the same location as the Mag 7.2 shaker. So that would definitely be an aftershock.

We're good here, but listening to the radio they apparently have a lot of adobe construction in that area. Adobe homes being hit with a Mag 7.2 quake is not a good thing.

It was a "Roller" type feeling for about 30 seconds, here in Marina del Rey.The Powerlines were visibly swaying, back & forth.I noticed some folks complaining of Motion sickness.I'd heard that at the same time as the Baja quake was happening, there was a 4.0 in Santa Monica Bay 6 miles out.

7.2 magnitude in Baja California My friend just told me he was on board a Navy vessel 150 miles away and felt it shaking. He has lived in CA for a long time... and been around the world in the Navy (almost 20 years service) and never felt an earthquake in a boat before.
Sounds a bit crazy

Yesterday, I also read a brief description that a number of homes near the epicenter were destroyed due to liquefaction. I don't recall the last time I've heard of reports of liquefaction after an earthquake, even in spite of the series of massive quakes we've had lately.

Southern California has been relatively quiet, major earthquakewise, since 1994. I hope this shaking will prompt residents to get up to snuff on preparedness at home, their workplace and in their vehicles.
It's just a matter of time....

Yep, time to repack the truck and replace the water. With summer approaching it's a good time. The stuff at home is continually rotated.
