The Snow Walker (DVD)

The Snow Walker (DVD) - 10/19/04 10:56 PM

Subject: The Snow Walker (DVD)

I was thinking of making this offer this morning, and I guess Brian shamed me into it.

I'll put the DVD up on the lending library forum, and Brian gets first dibs on it. All I ask is that when everyone is finished with it, the last person on the list sends it back

Re: The Snow Walker (DVD) - 10/20/04 10:00 AM

just an idea, does anyone have a dvd/ vcr combo or a dvd recorder?

make a tape or dvd copy of it to send around instead of the master if its that hard to find.

if the copy is damaged its ok you still own the original.

its not like theres any profit being made or anything traded for its value.

>>but isnt there some way to do that without breakin any laws?

IANAL! (I am not a lawyer!)... of course, no disclaimer will protect you from lawyers anyway, but we keep trying...

To answer your question, though, from what little I've gleaned from just having a mild interest in the subject, I wouldn't think so.

I think the actual wording of the relevant copyright exceptions would be from the original "Betamax" decision, that states that you have the right to time-shift broadcasts for your own use, and the right to create one archival backup of commercial media for your own use.

Note that while this right is not currently in doubt, it is being challenged by repeated attempts to legislate it out of existence. The media companies really, really want you to pay, either on a subscription basis or pay-per-view basis, for every bit of entertainment in your life, and are looking for any possible way to make that happen. Ten years ago, would anyone have considered paying by the month for radio?

The term they typically use for the MOST prohibited activity is "distribution". Note that profit is irrelevant; Netflix or Blockbuster can buy a movie and rent it to a thousand people (certainly "distribution"), or "trade it for it's value", but even they, with their clout, cannot ever do it with a copy.

Aside from the letter of the law, if a judge were to bother to examine the principle (doubtful, unless there are at least millions on both sides), I suspect the argument would be that the proposed activity could easily be interpreted as distribution that replaced ("denied") sales to those holding the copyright, thus "denying" them income.

And, of course, there are few higher crimes in this society than denying a huge corporation income... especially as business models themselves increasingly become laws.

Of course, distributing the orignal has exactly the same effect... but they're working on that too- as evidenced by the legal attacks on used-CD stores, for instance- but in the end they'll probably settle for "improving" the media formats every so often (15 years, accelerating) so you have to re-buy your entire entertainment collection (movies, music, games) over and over again instead. Getting everyone to move from vinyl records to CD and from VHS to DVD was hugely profitiable, expect MUCH more of the same, with less benefit to the consumer, and more "digital rights management" (consumer-rights removal) for each round.

Personally, I don't care even a little bit how whether you distribute the orignal or a copy- I just wouldn't make plans to do so publicly.

That's the most cynical thing I've ever heard. And so true.

Quote:
you have to re-buy your entire entertainment collection
I didn't think I was going to need to do that for my VHS tapes. DVD didn't seem to be much better than VHS, although they are more likely to be widescreen. But then I got a wide-screen HDTV. VHS doesn't look any worse, but DVD looks so much better, I can't stand to watch a VHS. So now I'm replacing my favorite movies, gradually. I don't think I've even finished replacing all my favorite vinyl records with CD!

Re: The Snow Walker (DVD) - 10/21/04 07:41 PM

Well, I don't know how big Lion's Gate Entertainment is, but they're not exactly MGM. Making a movie is not cheap; filming it in the Canadian Arctic probably tripled the price. Choosing an unknown teenage Eskimo girl with no previous acting experience, who spoke English as a second language, to play the female lead may have been a brilliant stroke of artistic genius but it probably cut the potential audience in half. Setting it in Canada instead of Alaska ensured that it would never see mainstream distribution in the USA. And they probably lost a lot of the teenage male audience by not having the female lead prance around in the nude.

So I don't particularly begrudge them the $30 I paid for the DVD.

Looks like it's going on quite a tour

btw, if you think the hero looks familiar but can't quite place him? He was the left-handed, scripture-quoting sniper in "Saving Private Ryan". (He's probably been in lots of other movies, but that's where I remember him from.)

Hope everyone enjoys the movie. Share it with your significant other and they may start thinking you're not so crazy after all

Well, you've figured it out, I guess it's time to come clean. "aardwolfe" and I are really the same person. That's why nobody has ever seen us in the same room together.

When we fissioned the two personas early on, everything seemed to go fine, but over time PL's status changed with his other statistics, and aardwolfe's didn't, so it was bound to be noticed sooner or later. Sort of a cyberspace "Picture of Dorian Gray" thing.

Some of you were getting dangerously close to the truth, so I/we decided to throw off suspicion by taking this roundabout way to lend The Snow Walker dvd to myself... for which, while I'm at it, I should really thank myself, it was quite enjoyable.

Now that I/we have been discovered, I/we will have to abandon these, uh, aliaii, and go away, only to start all over again. I'm just not sure whether I will return as two personas next time, or we will return as just one.

By the way, "brian", I/we can't help but notice that you have no status at all... so to speak. Odd, isn't it? And yet, you were so quick to point out discrepancies in others....

Have you ever thought that maybe.. there's only one real person on this forum, other than yourself?

I'm sure the rest of us have.

But, how could I know that?

Unless... ???

Snow Walker, 2 more books? - 11/24/04 02:37 PM

I've had "The Snow Walker" longer than I intended to, and I apologize for that. Didn't have time to view it until Saturday evening, and since I'm doing a long subway commute to work, and work is no where near a post office, I haven't had the chance to get it back in circulation yet (sorry, Tom).

But.. I'm going to be "off" on Friday, so I should be able to get it off on Friday morning.

While we're at it...

Having benefited from the generosity of others in the Lending Library (thanks, aardwolfe) got me to thinking what I might be able to give back.

I have a copy of Mors Kochanski's "Bushcraft" that I'd be happy to contribute if anyone's interested; I don't think I saw that it was already out there, if it is, I apologize:

Amazon/Bushcraft

Then there's another thought. I don't know if there's a Library policy on fiction, but those who hang out here probably remember that I've often named Robert A. Heinlein's book "Tunnel in the Sky" as my favorite "survival" novel, and some others who have read it have responded enthusiastically.

Amazon/Tunnel in the Sky

If anyone's interested, and there's no objection to fiction in the "pool", I'd be glad to make that available as well. Just let me know.

Randy,

I suspect we won't get to see the movie until the weekend, so we will send it off to you probably at the beginning of next week. You are both next and last on the list to date. Should I send it around the start of next week, or should I wait until you are again getting deliveries, say well after the Christmas busy mail season?

Let me know your wishes. Also PM me with your address and any other necessary delivery information.

I certainly do not want to cause a jam here, but I will not be around to receive it or view it until then.

PM on the way.

So anyone else please feel free to jump ahead and I will go after them.

I have just sent you via UPS a package containing Aardwolfe's DVD The Snow Walker, and Presumed Lost's book Bushcraft. UPS estimated it would arrive at your address about Wednesday, January 5, 2005.

If no one else requests the movie and book you will need to return them to their original owners.

I have also sent you a PM with the tracking information for the package.

Enjoy,

Dennis, you should take your email address off your profile. It's reachable by email-harvesting bots, and your spam level will increase. Most forums can be set up to email you when you get a private message, so that's what we usually use.

You'd be surprised, Dennis. I've heard some columnists and bloggers, who have to have their email address in the open, complain about hundreds of spams a day. I've been very careful with my email addess, and I usually only get about 10 to 20 a day. I had a little bit of a bump shortly after my cousin gave my email address to eVite when setting up our secret santa a year ago, but it went back down again.

Maybe you've been careless on other online forums in the same way. One way to check is to google for your email address. Usually, you can have the forum moderators delete your email address from their archives. Spammers prefer fresh email addresses, so if you stamp it out everywhere, your spam will start to show a decrease within a month.

Re: The Snow Walker (DVD) - 01/11/05 08:18 AM

Aardwolfe,

Hi!

You know, I think it really did help them to understand why we worry about survival before problems occur. When we suddenly confront a danger, we may not have the time and other resources needed to save ourselves. Surviving requires advance preparation. It simply takes a lot of time to try to predict the likely problems, plan how to surmount them, learn the knowledge and techniques to overcome threats, get the tools needed to accomplish survival tasks, and finally develop the skills and mindset required in survival situations.

The movie illustrated what can happen to someone who is unprepared to take care of basic survival needs which were totally foreseeable. But for the pilot's fluke transporting of an ill but well-prepared passenger, he would have been totally bereft of virtually everything necessary to survive his remote plane crash.

My kids and wife saw graphically the starkly different outcomes in an emergency depending on the level of preparedness or lack thereof.

Again, thanks for sharing the movie with all of us.

Hey all,
Well, you don't konw me from Adam, but I would love to check out this film.
I have read about it, but it isn't offered at my local store.
I actually haven't posted before, but check in pretty regularly and have been "using" the site for years. A great weatlh of info here.
So if you can trust me, I would enjoy checking it out...
Maybe, someday, when I get the chance I will pull some of the survival/outdoor books off my shelves and throw them into the pot for others, and return the favor. My son keeps me pretty busy, though...
Thanks,

Makes me want to read some Fawley Mowat now.

Enjoy.

The SnowWalker DVD arrived safe and sound.
I hope to have it in the mail to the next person by the end of the week, if not Monday, so whomever would like to have it next, just drop me an email or pm.
Thanks for letting me check it out.

Re: Snow Walker, 2 more books? - 02/23/05 01:11 AM

Finally got a chance to view this and really enjoyed it, and am pretty sure my 9 month old son enjoyed it...
My wife really liked it, too and we are planning to add it to our library for futuring viewing when my son gets older.
Thanks again.

So who, if anyone, else is interested in checking this out next?
Please PM me and I will get in the mail to you ASAP.
I will wait a few days to give everyone a chance to see this message.
Then, if I don't get any bites, I guess I will send it on back to Mr. Lorimer.
Thanks,
Brome

Still up for grabs. If no takers in one week, it's going back to the owner....lovely movie, by the way.

Yah, I liked it so much I bought my own copy. Tough to track down too- IIRC, I had to buy it from an amazon partner.

If you didn't watch the 'making of extras' make a point to do so!

Re: The Snow Walker (DVD) - 11/29/06 04:00 AM

Now that I can post again, I just wanted to give a long belated 'thank you' to aardwolfe for lending me this DVD. It was a very good movie and I think anyone who hasn't seen it, should.

Where is it right now anyway?

Re: The Snow Walker (DVD) - 02/23/07 08:56 PM

You're very welcome. Glad so many people enjoyed it.

BTW, the return snail-mail address I included on the box is no longer valid (I have moved from Calgary to Ottawa) so whoever has it, please don't try sending it back to me. Just scratch out the address and keep it circulating. (I got another copy of it anyway.) :-)

Re: The Snow Walker (DVD) - 02/25/07 06:00 PM

As I posted a year ago I still have the DVD. It is residing in the warm (boring) climate of So. Cal. If anyone wants it please PM me with your address and I'll send it on its way.

Regards, Kenn

Ok all you survival movie buffs.
I have The Snow Walker DVD in my possession.
aardwolfe now knows where it is and has given permission for it to continue to circulate.
If anyone wants to view it, email me and I will send it to you. Email better than PM as I don't always check the forum.
Thanks again to aardwolfe for making this movie available to us. It is very much worth watching.
Mike
