Comanche,

I am done with this and should get it posted this week, along with a stack of Christmas presents to family. I will PM you when it is sent.

Good read BTW. Doug's review covers it well. I think this is a very good text....much better than most of the ones out there that are as dry as dust. This and David Alloway's are my favorites of the modern texts.

Hi Schwert,

Received it today in great shape, nice packing job! I'm guessing about a week or two due to holidays and mixed up schedules around here & I'll be ready to send it on to ...

I kind of think you can read this at your leisure....I do not know if there is a current next......

Glad it made it there in good shape.

Let me know what you think about his caffeine/ephedra discussion. I thought most of his ideas and recommendations were very good....except for this one. I am totally addicted to caffeine but I am not a fan of using ephedra and caffeine as a pep product.

Enjoy

That was one of my biggest issues with the book too. Other than that is was great.

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 12/23/03 11:59 PM

Schwert & pvr4: Skimmed over the book last night and was a bit baffled (and caught off guard) by that part as well. I'm looking forward to re-reading it in a more relaxed setting and try to see what I missed on the first pass.

From what I've seen so far, the remainder of the book is pretty much on target. At first glance, there seem to be some pretty good physiological explainations are given for a few things that I've wondered about for a while.

The "Praise and other" comments section in the front of the book provided some interesting reading.

billy.guttery: You're next in line, send a PM with your address, I'll post when done reading and ready to ship.

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 12/24/03 01:16 AM

This text is fresh to say the least. His thought behind the basics of his kit are clear and logical...even the stimulant stuff. Watch carefully the section on fire starting. He does several pages on matches including selection, striking, waxing, containers, etc. His detail here is amazing compared to most texts which essentially say carry some matches. It is very clear that he has thought about these tools in a teaching mode rather than a telling mode....very nice. He then goes on with magnesium and flint bars, lighters, magnifiers etc. If anyone reads this book and does not come away with a fine appreciation of the importance of firelighting then they really did not read it!

This book has got to be one of the best on the shelf for both its fresh perspective, clear language, and attempt to teach. It has much more to offer in my view than many or most of the texts you can find at bookstores or libraries.

Enjoy

>>Of course some lawyer will undoubtably find a reason to challenge this in court

You say that like it's a bad thing. Isn't that what lawyers are for?

In any event, it's not likely to be the lawyers mounting a court challenge - if anyone does, it'll be the corporations that were making millions by peddling a dangerous food supplement to the public.

Billy.guttery,

I anticipate shipping this out this week, I'll confirm here that it is in the mail and will also send a PM.

Overall a nice read. After re-reading the Ephedra section, I now see where he is coming from, although I do not concur with the actions detailed. since TANSTAFL. It may work for others though it may well be a moot point with the recent changes in legal regulation...

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 01/27/04 12:43 AM

From a personal standpoint, I don't believe stimulants or depressants should be administered without a valid medical/tactical reason. People who stay awake too long may BELIEVE they are accomplishing something, but look at any meth addict for the actual results...lots and lots of smoke, but no fire Forty hour forced march where you don't have to think, just move...maybe. As long as someone who's had some sleep is telling you which way to go...

Anyhow, looking forward to reading this one.

Re: T.A.O.K.Y.A.A. > Checkedout to billy.guttery - 02/05/04 12:42 PM

Pretty decent book; parts I liked, parts I didn't like.

The whole ephedrine/caffeine section was done tastefully, your mileage may vary, however...I'm quite certain he's one heck of an instructor Party On!

Ok, who's next? If no one owns up in the next week or so, I'll send it back to Mini...

Arrived and I've looked through it a little. It's an entertaining book. Some of the equipment choices are a bit behind the times, but the guy has a good practical attitude. I'll try to post further comments after I've read it more.

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 01/20/05 12:11 PM

It's packed up and ready to go, but I haven't had a chance to bring it to the post office yet. Stupid new rules, can't drop packages over 1 pound in the mailbox. I taped a Countycomm coin cell flashlight to the outside of the book, to start your kit with.

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 01/26/05 11:18 PM

Just got the book. Thanks for it and the light. Much brighter than I thought it would be. I'm going to get a pack from CountyComm and pass them out among my friends.

If anyone wants the book after a week or two, let me know.

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 02/04/05 10:03 AM

I'm glad the stuff arrived ok. One warning about the CC light, they can turn on accidentally if you drop them (the weight of the batteries pushes the switch sled forward) and the batteries can drain that way. You'll notice I put a piece of scotch tape over the switch of the one I sent you, to prevent that from happening. If you put the light in a PSK, you probably want to leave the tape on it until you want to use it.

There's another light that I like better these days, a Photon II clone being sold for $1.25 by KevinL at CPF. See the "Tiny PSK light" thread on the survival section of this board for some more info. He also has a $1.75 version that's about 1/3 the size of a Photon (that's what the "tiny" thread is about) but that's a less practical light unless you're trying to absolutely minimize your kit size (e.g. Altoids mini-tin).

Re: Book: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive - 02/05/05 06:46 AM

Good to know. I'm currently using the light as EDC but I imagine that i'll stock away a few for kit purposes. Thank you again!
