Anti-virus for PDAs?? - 08/22/06 03:16 PM

I just ordered a new PDA, and I was offered Norton Anti Virus for handhelds...and I thought that was odd. It is Wi Fi capable, but I guess I hadn't considered viruses and spyware (the girl said it was anti spyware too). I suppose it's becoming the standard, but has anyone used the anti virus for their handheld?

I've had a Palm OS handheld for over five years. I have never had or heard of anyone getting a virus on their Palm. Anyone ever get a virus on a handheld?

I hadn't heard of it either, (I currently have Palm, but switching to Windows Mobile) but I guess there are at least three known viruses for the Palm OS and currently none for WM...how wierd is that? Palm being targeted and not Windows??

It seems the viruses can be transfered through Wifi, Bluetooth or IR. I guess it is becoming more prevelant since more PDAs are Wifi capable now. I'm going to have my PDA for at least three years...maybe it's worth it in case it becomes more common...I don't know <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

virus and spywares have infiltrated Nokia software. You can check symantec , McAffee or Trend Micro antivirus software manufacturers if they produce for PDA yet. I am very sure they will make it. There are lethal virus for Nokia PDAs that will scramble the ROM chip on the device.

It's been done. It's rare, but not as rare as you might think.

The biggest risk is your wi-fi and bluetooth connections- if you aren't using them, TURN THEM OFF. Not only are they sucking up a bunch of power, but they want to hop into bed with device that sweet talks them. Yes, the security has improved in the past few years, but bluetooth is still pretty promiscous. It's not so much what you could catch, but what could be borrowed.

If it runs any flavor of windows, yes, you need virus protection.
