I had one due that about a week ago at school. Kept smelling something burning and finally located the right one when I saw smoke rising out of the top of it.

what kind of monitor was it hillbilly? My monitor is Mitshubishi 900U 19inch. It is great monitor. I don't understand how it can burn up plastic inside. It suppose to have CRT tube. The burning odour smell like the green electrode coating on PC motherboard. I had smell a few real motherboards burn up in flames twice.

It means you have two choices:

Upgrade now.
Upgrade soon.

You've got caps going in there probably, basedon the smell. You DO NOT fix a CRT at the consumer level, becuase there things in there that will send you across the room if you touch them and cause you to not remember what you touched or feel your fingers for a few hours. Turn it in to your local HAZMAT folks, and buy a new one.

If the "magic smoke" in your monitor escapes, it will stop working. Best to get rid of it before that. Sometimes the "magic smoke" becomes "magic fire". I've never seen this elusive beast, but apparently some monitors possess it.

I've seen this problem several times. It's an indication that you should start shopping for that LCD monitor that you've been wanting.

It may be a repairable condition, but you may have a difficult time finding someone who will do the work.

yeah, I finally dump the CRT monitor. It is a fire hazard. I just bought the samsung 20inch monitor. It has 1600x1200 resolution. it is awesome. It is as good as my old CRT monitor.

Please tell me it was/will be disposed of properly. CRTs are full of heavy metals, and everything in there can (and should be) recycled.

Were would you take old paint and used motor oil? That's generally a good place to start.

Do you have a curb side trash pick up, or do you take your trash to the dump yourself? If the later, ask them on your next trash run. If the former, call the provider (either contracted or municipal). They should be able to tell you. Also check your phone book for recyclers, not sure how they'd be listed in a canadian directory. And if that doesn't work, your provincial enviromental agency should be able to give you a list of providers.

Dont' be suprised if they charge you a few dollars for this. It's fair- there are capacitors in monitors that I won't handle, period. Taking one apart, I'd want to be paid well.

I know, it sounds like a lot. Don't worry, this is one monitor. Last summer, I had to dispose of four TONS dead and dated computers for an agency that had been storing them on site. That was fun- I'm just glad I didn't have to sign the check.

I just went to the dump (transfer station) a few days ago. There is a new sign on the window that says to take them to the HazMat building, for a fee.

CRTs are shielded with lead blocks and circuit boards are loaded with different chemicals. I for one would chuck anything that started to smoke. The fumes and fire potential would make my decision quickly. I've worked with computers for the better part of 2 decades now and I know they have a useful time limit.
