Airline hand luggage advice please

Hi all,
As quite a few of you seem to travel extensively, I would like to ask your advice about the best VALUE hand luggage (max dimensions - 22x16x8 inches) and as max carry on weight - 6kgs then I can dispense with rollers and other paraphenalia - need it to be light but not so light that the rough handling kills it
Could you also tell me why you make that choice as you will probably alert me to problems I hadn't thought of.

Try to stay away from anything that has a lot of places were it can snag on chairs, under seats, in over head been, etc. Try maxpedition.com

Personally, I use the Patagonia LBC (now discontinued) or a super-lightweight messenger style bag I got at the Gap (of all places) in Bath, England. I've been from Japan to Europe and many places in between with the former, and all over the U.S., Mexico (including Chiapas) and Hawaii with the latter.

Do you know the maximum dimensions a bag can be and still be considered carry-on?

My carry on is a Kelty Redwing backpack; I have been using it for the past 5+ years. I can get 2-3 changes of clothes in there, plus personal care and convenience items. It fits in the overhead and allows me to bring what I need for several days, if my check-in luggage gets delayed or lost. I can wear it and still have my hands free. While in county it serves as my primary piece of luggage, refilling it with clothing, etc. from the check-in luggage as needed.

I believe the dimensions are the max allowed by British Airways. If I can manage their carry on size then most other airlines will be more lenient with carry on if I have overfilled my bag as they have greater allowances.
If I'm wrong, don't hesitate to inform me

I have the MEI "Voyageur" that Doug recommends on onebag and am extremely pleased with it. Packed with my normal travelling gear it comes in at around 8kg which is almost guaranteed to be allowed as carry on.

No more than 45 linear inches (H+W+D). Usually shown as 22"x14"x9". You are also allowed one "personal item" which can be a purse, briefcase, laptop, diaper bag, camera case, etc.
