The UKs advice on terrorism

The UKs advice on terrorism - 07/26/04 06:42 PM

Three years after 9/11 the British Government has finally produced a pamphlet on what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. A copy of which will be sent to every house hold in Britain.

http://www.preparingforemergencies.gov.uk/booklet/index.htm

I haven't read all of it yet, but it seems very much to reinforce what has been said on this forum - without the emphasis on knives and guns.
Listening to a few TV interviews with Joe Public, most people will glance through it and throw it away
Others complain that the 8.3 million pounds spent on it would have been better spent else where.
It makes me angry to think, that if the worst does happen, those people will probably be the first to blame the government for not doing enough, but refuse to take advice and take a few simple precautionary measures.
How can anyone complain about the "nanny state" when people refuse to take responsiblity for their own lives?. The attitude seems to be - " it won't be me, and anyway they'll take care ot it"

Maybe we will have to learn the hard way....

I see they have the same emphasis on "Call 999" that we have for "Dial 911" for assistance. Unfortunately, too many people are lulled into a sense of imminent security and/or assistance by thinking that they can rely on this "public service" instead of preparing and acting on their own.

Alas, our emergency response system has been proven quite fallable and easily overwhelmed.

How is your emergency system?

Joblot:

This is exactly why I said on a previous post, tell the people who know you prepare and will be prepared that you will not help them. The shock of having a friend or aquaintance who could help telling them they will not help will induce more participation on their part, or at least when the excretement hits the oscillating member, they will not bother you out of embarrassment or because they know you will not be there for them.

Tough to do, but better for them and you.

There is a more humourous, if politically challenging version at: Alternative Site

Unfortunately, the UK government seems to have taken that spoof site way, way too seriously ...

I wish I could comment on the British (And Californians.), but the threads I do so on, always seem to be getting shut down.

Since the threads are more important to me than my own little jabs, I will not comment.

Feel free to comment. We seem to have more of a sense of humour than our governments.
If the address of the spoof site wasn't so similar to the real site, I doubt whether there would be so much fuss.
On the otherhand cracking jokes about bombs and weapons in airports could land you in jail, so why should they have any more of a sense of humour when it comes to websites?
At least we can still laugh and critisise these subjects on forums such as this without getting arrested......for now.

EDIT
I don't think making jokes about bombs at airports is at all funny. I do however think giving out prison sentences for offenders is more than a little harsh.

Hey, don't knock Californians! I lived in Berkeley for 3 years and had a blast ... please don't assume liberal social positions (or however you want to characterize us bicoastal folks ) are inconsistent with being prepared and aware!
