The writer surmises that the woman performed the caesarian to selflessly save the child's life. I wonder if she had come to the point where she realized that she would most likely die anyway, and this was one last desperate act to save herself, and, of course, (hopefully) the child.
The agony of labor can just about blot out all other pain.

This reminds me of something a comedian said years ago:
He was doing a skit about the birth of his first child, and how he had accompanied his wife to the labor ward. He said that he was amazed at how mean a woman in labor could be. He actually heard one woman scream out: "My husband should have this pain in his left eye!"
