Zippo Butane Inserts

I recently became aware that Zippo is now making butane inserts for its classic lighters. I bought one and dusted off my '60s vintage Zippo.

Haha, cool. It will be interesting to see how they hold up.

I expect that workers in hydrocarbon related fields may be a good market. The smokers out there aren't allowed Bics etc. because of the accidental fire/spark potential. Last I checked, Zippos were still allowed. (Moving target - don't quote me.)

Personally I have never found a refillable butane lighter that I could rely on in the field. Too bad; hate the plastic waste, but facts are facts. Refillables are handy around home though, where an empty tank is just a minor nuisance.

Those inserts have been around for 8-10 years at least. I've used them at Rocky Mountain elevations in freezing conditions, and in the Caribbean in the Summer. They hold up as well as any lighters I've used. Never would carry only one lighter though...

In the field . . . no. But sitting in the man-shed with a cigar and a bottle of Irish Whiskey, and your Second Field Force, Long Binh 1968 Zippo, contemplating the universe and your place in it . . . priceless.
