Free online 1639 training course for WA gun buy - 07/04/19 04:14 PM

Initiative I 1639 now requires WA residents buying a semiautomatic assault rifle to first take a training course. (Among other new requirements). One gun store has one online for free. Good for five years. So if you are looking to buy or inherit a Ruger 10/22 rimfire or Grandad's Garand, this would be good value. Other courses I have seen offered cost upwards of $75.

Might be interesting for others looking for training, or curious about the new laws, tho out of state residents can no longer buy semi auto rifles in WA.

Do I understand that a Ruger 10/22 is considered to be an assault rifle? Seems a bit extreme. I can certainly vouch for the effectiveness of the M1 Garand ("Old Betsy").

Any rifle, rimfire or other that is a semi auto is no longer available for sale, or transfer to those under 21.

They are now semi automatic assault rifles.

21 or over and you have to have training, a background check that includes the state perusing health records annually (even if you sell the gun) and there are storage requirements that if one has a gun stolen and it wasn't locked just so, or reported promptly, and that gun is used by a prohibited person, the owner can be charged with a gross misdemeanor or felony.

The irony is that if you buy an ar or ak pattern firearm as a receiver,, since they could be made into a rifle, pistol, pump or bolt action, they are exempt from the new laws.

So it will catch the plinkers and old battle rifles in the new costly rules, but not the modern sporting rifles/patrol rifles/assault weapons (what ever they are called by the pro or anti gun factions).

Wow! That means my vintage AR-7 22 semi-auto, dating from the early 60s, is now an assault rifle. Glad I am fully equipped and up to date. I had always regarded my AR-7 as a survival/plinking item.

This thread has gone beyond talking about what the law is and ventured into firearms politics. I don’t want to lock the thread, so please don’t make any more political comments here.
