Let´s face it. The wolf probably were in greater need of the deer than the hunter.

To me the story reads like the hunter got most of the meat anyway.
If the canine got only a carcass with little tiny scraps of meat "steal" seems a bit exagerated.

Looks like now they think it was likely a husky dog. The picture does seem to show a muzzle and legs that are shorter than wolves shown in pictures. Pretty animal.
A fellow I hunted with this year had two wolves follow him back to his truck when he stopped alongside the road to relieve himself. At first when he saw them he said he stood tall (he is a big boy about 6'8" 350 lbs) and took a couple of steps their way to try to shoo them off, but they just did the same and stepped towards him, so he walked backwards facing them, to his truck. Said he will not leave his pistol in his truck when he pees anymore.
