Kayaker attacked by beaver - 07/05/14 02:53 AM
Beaver attack report. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the creek....
Note that low tech weaponry was used to abort the attack: NY is an open-carry paddle state.

I wonder why people don't get so worked up over beaver defenses as they do over bear defenses. I mean, they are both "B" animals. This case sounds pretty bad -- dragging the guy into the water, the stuff of horror films. So, firearms, beaver spray, paddles, or a whistle?

That guy was lucky. Last autumn I read a news story about an angler in Russia. He was attacked when he tried to take a close up photo of the beaver. The beaver severed the femoral artery and the angler died.
Maybe keeping some distance from wild animals is a good practice. Doubly so if the animal is a vegetarian.

That would be more embarassing than dying of hypothermia or starvation... just sayin

I prefer canoes to kayaks for beaver defense purposes: greater freeboard tends to discourage beaver boarding parties, a single blade paddle is superior to the double blade as a rodent-swatter, and the kneeling or seated canoe posture provides better leverage and height advantage than the kayak's below-the-waterline seating.
cdc says that woodchucks and beaver can be rabid, and
beaver rights acivists suggest victim was asking for it in the Belarus Beaver Battle.
Sounds like a lucky escape for the Kayaker. That beaver's got a vicious streak a mile wide. It's a killer, tis the most foul cruel and bad-tempered rodent you've ever set eyes on, which it seems can do anyone up a treat.

I think possums are pretty foul... but I've never ran into a ill-mannered beaver before either.

M friend has a opossum, among many other "wild" animals. It's a fine pet and while it was cute as a baby but its ugly as sin now. Maybe wildlife is fed up with our crap and striking back? You really can't blame them. JMHO.
Probably, the most viscous rodent attack ever filmed.

Thanks Am Fear. We have a herd of domestic bunnies that were abandoned as babies and now run wild through the neighborhood. Including a white one. We all feed them even though they are wild. Now I'll have to carry my .45 and keep an eye on them when I toss the trash or check the mail. Guess running is out. Lol.
