Lashing hardware for backpack

Lashing hardware for backpack - 02/06/14 04:06 PM

My backpack has lash points. I want to put in a lashing system on my backpack like the one in the picture below, but I can't find the hardware -- well, mainly

(1) that adjusting thing in the middle that can accept two cords; and
(2) some way to terminate the cords.

Any ideas, guys? Thanks for the help!

I've never used them, but when looking for similar items to improve my knife lanyard I bookmarked this page: Shaotech Lanyard Accessories. They seem to have a real good variety of hardware (including the whistle cord end I was looking for).

Also, I know MEC up here stocks a limited variety of these type of hardware accessories so it might be worth trying your local REI or similar.

OK, I figured out that's called a Cord Lord. Now I just have to find a vendor:

The original picture has more of a button style lock which I think might work a bit better for this type of application (these are usually done with shock-cord). I wonder if the cord lord might be harder to use (the pack I have which uses this hardware uses it on the cord that cinches the top closure I believe).

I think I have a couple packs at home that have this type of shock-cord system and I can check what they use later on.

You might check in your area and see if you can find any of the Nite Ize S-biners to terminate the cords. I've got one attached to a length of 550 cord to improvize a plumb line when I'm in the field for work.

S-biners are all over. REI has them near the checkout. CountyComm also carries them -- S-biners - in multiple sizes.

Different size shock cord:

Different types of cord locks depending on the diameter of shock cord you choose:

http://cord-lock.com/ ... Never used them but it looks like they have any type of cord lock and cord end you might want.

You could also wander into your favorite camping store. All the bigger ones normally have repair equipment and shock cord and cord locks are normally stocked.

As an alternative to cord ends I normally melt the ends like you would paracord and use a double or triple fisherman's knot to secure the ends. You can use whatever is your favorite stopper knot.

Good luck.

Seattle Fabric carries all sorts of items like you mention. They sell lots of outdoors materials ranging from cord locks to fabric and sealer to make your own kayak. Awesome store and great customer service.

you might also consider a clip-on net. potentially handier because you can jam a few things behind the net and they wont fall out. local motorcycle stores sell small nets that folks use to put over items carried on the back of the bike. you would have to re-arrange a few hooks, but not a very hard mod to do.

good luck,
