Ode to Oatmeal - 06/15/13 02:08 PM

Oatmeal lovers unite! What's your favourite recipe? Non-cereal use?

As cereal:

-add brown sugar, cinnamon and milk
-add maple syrup, peanut butter, chocolate
-add dry or fresh fruit, raisins, berries, nuts and wheat germ
-crumble a granola or cliff bar on top
-mix with hot chocolate instead of water
-add a little instant coffee
-add wood sorrel (or other herbs and spices) black pepper, etc. to make a savoury oatmeal

As a non-cereal:

-add a pack of flavoured instant oatmeal to bannock and pancake mixes
-add to meatloaf and hamburger beef mixtures instead of bread crumbs
-use as coating on fish instead of standard batter

I'm sure you foodies have a bunch more, so let's hear 'em!

Instant oatmeal packet + big scoop of peanut butter + one packet of hot chocolate + hot water. It's part of a good breakfast before a day on the trail.

Dried cranberries and brown sugar...figs & peaches. is yummy too.

Re: Ode to Oatmeal - 06/16/13 12:58 AM

1/2 cup rolled oats plus milk - heavily laced with any of several nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans) plus either fresh or dried blueberries (1/4 cup) and raisins (1/4 cup). there is enough added sugar in those garnishments to sweeten the oatmeal quite adequately. Chocolate or cocoa sounds tempting - I must try that, as well.

I eschew those wimpy (and expensive) dinky little packets and get my oats six pounds at a time in the big, big box.

it's Porridge.
Or on a bad day - gruel.

I use oatmeal in my meatloaf. Aside from that I loathe oatmea and won't touch the stuff.

I hear you - but oatmeal is both healthy and dirt cheap. If you want it to actually taste good, you need the additives.

Additives -- Blueberries and walnuts

Banana Oatmeal cookies
2 over ripe bananas
1 cup quick oats
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger (optional)
1/8 tsp salt (optional)

Mix all together. Use a spoon to drop, flatten and shape into cookie shape on PARCHMENT PAPER covered cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes at 350.

This is my new favorite sweet snack since I learned I was allergic to wheat.

Posts like this are one of the things that make this such a terrific site. I kid you not, I was getting ready to post something about oatmeal because I was getting bored with plan old brown sugar and you beat me to it bacpacjac. Thanks!

I will throw into the mix instead of brown sugar and cinnamon, use a glob of honey and cinnamon. Those little squeeze bears of honey work well if you are hiking. Just make sure and double bag it in zip loc baggies in case that virtually useless cap comes off.

Cheers,

LW

Muesli like I just had for breakfast at a hotel in Munich - it wasn't the dry muslix that I've had a few times and didn't like, this was oats soaked in some combination of cream and apples and some fruit that made it all particularly tasty. Now I look on Wikipedia and realize there's a whole faction of muesli eating world that I've missed out on for 50 years, who knew. I'm a whole oats heated and eaten with brown sugar and a splash of milk kind of guy, but for the next while I'll be experimenting with muesli recipes.

Oatmeal rocks! love the stuff with toast for breakfast.

Re: Ode to Oatmeal - 06/18/13 02:22 PM

It is at least conceivable to use oatmeal in any savory recipe involving rice or wheat: a hamburger/tomato/onion/oatmeal concoction, or sausage and oatmeal stuffed peppers. This is kind of what is going on with haggis, if one ignores the sheep bits, and of haggis it is said '...As the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique puts it, "Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour".'

Anyone tried this? My audience at home is a to gastronomically conservative to accept this sort of tinkering.

I have had haggis exactly once, at Contin in the Scottish highlands, and it was truly delicious and savory. For many foods, it is best to not be too curious about the ingredients and the manner of their assembly.

Re: Ode to Oatmeal - 06/21/13 01:15 PM

Now that is the best use of oatmeal I have seen so far!!! LOL

Not so good for backpacking, but still a good use of it.

I am definitely going to go in search of that version of Oatmeal. Maybe BevMo ...

Too early in the day to be even thinking about such goodness..

Oh yeah, Oatmeal Stout is one of my favorites, and a great after hike beverage. Just tuck a 4 pack in a stream and like caught fish they should be chilled a ready for you when you hike out. Yum.

Just started selling it down here. It's poorly placed amongst the Sake and not by the ciders for some reason. Came across it accidentally. Rather potent stuff. Real cider, too. Not that apple juice with grain alcohol added.

This thread is going to get me drunk. Who saw that coming from a thread about oatmeal. LOL!

Re: Ode to Oatmeal - 06/23/13 02:58 AM

Start with crumbled bacon and shredded cheese...and replace the oatmeal with grits. Make enough to have leftovers, press them into a loaf, refrigerate until the following day, slice and fry in butter. Drop a fried egg on top and serve. The oatmeal with brown or maple sugar, butter and fruit--fresh or dried--can be dessert. Forget about lunch: that should run you right up to dinner.

Before I went paleo I would eat oatmeal savory. My wife would cook it in chicken stock, then I'd add Scott's BBQ sauce and eat with plenty of Bacon. I found some really good saur kraut here in SD. I added it to the mix and found it delicious.
