What I have discovered

What I have discovered - 08/08/12 08:15 PM

These days preparing for a week trip for the whole family and gathering all we need in bags. So, I pulled one extension cord that we always take in such trips and I notice that several 1-foot sections of it were covered in messy goo.

Last time it was used by my wife and other families in one of their trips, and one guy trying to put it back neatly has folded the extension cord and wrapped it in duct tape. Stored in triple digit (°F) temperature, the duct tape glue melted and oozed all over.

There was no question of leaving that particlular extension cord , so the only option I thought of was to pull the duct tape and cover the messy parts with another (transparent nylon) tape. Something like 2-inch sctosh tape. That was messy work anyway and my han got sticky. So I put on a latex medical glove to stop it becoming more messy and leaving the cleaning thing to later.

I finished wrapping sections of the cable with tape and started to remove the latex glove. Believe it or not, the gooey stuff on my hand was gone !!!! The latex glove removed the oozey glue.

Just to test my discovery , I found a small section of the extension cord that still had some glue and rubbed it with the latex glove. Voila. It worked !!! And i touched the glove all over. Not sticky !!!

So, I grabbed half a dozen latex gloves and stashed them in my travel bag. You never know !!

This is why I'm reluctant to lend out certain types of gear. Who the heck wraps extension cords in duct tape?

I had some latex gloves in my RV which gets pretty hot in the summer (94F right now). I found that they were becoming brittle and tore when I tried to put them on. At first I wondered if it was just an defective batch of gloves, but I found an article stating that they do degrade with heat and they have been known to spontaneously combust!

The Importance of Proper Glove Storage

I don't think we have to worry about spontaneous combustion, but storage conditions are something to consider.

WD-40 removes such a goo instantly. But good to know anyway.

Or cheaper zip ties or reuseable zip ties? Or simply wraps the extension cord with itself?
