Ever since my friend Paul Moore of Pmooreknives.webs.com turned me on to this method, I've not tied my shoes the "old" way again! Here's the video I made:

This is so simple it makes me laugh to think how long I used double knots and struggle to keep the kids shoelaces from coming undone

I use a square knot, and than a bow to soak up the excess.
The square knot is very easy to open by yanking on one end to upset the knot.

Looks like a square knot with one end looped over twice instead of once.
Pretty neat, I'll try it next time.

I tie mine almost the same way. I double the bottom knot too. So it is a quick release surgeon's knot.
