I picked up a refurbished Fully Rugged mil spec Panasonic Toughbook at tigerdirect.com. for under $400. It's not the fastest computer, but what a great knock around utility computer. It's got enough giddy up to watch DVD's. I love the touch screen and built-in GPS.

A decent (open source) OS makes older slower machines nice and speedy.

Yeah. Ubuntu runs great on it. I have a three partition setup. Win XP, Win 7 and Ubuntu.
