Mark your calendars! The end of the world is nigh, and we've got a specific date: the Rapture will occur on 21 May, 2011, and the world ends on 21 October 2011.
Well, I guess it had to end some time. It has been really fun and and I'd like to take this time time to thank you all. Sad, I thought we had more time but I guess not. So what are you all planning to do. Shall it be a glorious blowout of wild debauchery, or will you be going quietly with friends and family gathered around?
The not so bad part is that this vastly simplified survival logistics. I mean, if your the sort who will be taking the early bus out you only have to stock up for nine months from now. And everyone else will be coming along five month after that. No more worrying about what happens in the long run because there will be no long run. Something of a relief ... really.

The really good news is that it seems unlikely that we are going to get pummeled into oblivion by an asteroid any time in the near term. Turns out the dire predictions otherwise were based more on a lack of good evidence than any actual fact.

A cosmic gamma-ray burst striking the Earth could be harmful to ocean plankton at depths of up to 75 m, according to a team of Cuban researchers. These organisms account for up to 40% of the ocean's photosynthesis, so such an event could have a serious impact on Earth's carbon dioxide levels.
OMG a gamma-ray burst could kill all the plankton down to a depth of 75m and then global warming ruins our day. Wait ...
