It's coming. Prepare. My German Shepard says so! - 02/17/10 04:54 AM

Something's coming. I don't know what. But my aging German Shepard has started practicing preparedness and stocking up on supplies recently. It started with simple hoarding of all the toys from our other dogs. Then she moved on and stashed away some boxes of Girl Scout cookies by her bed (she couldn't resist tasting a few to make sure they were OK!) Now she's gotten into canned goods from the pantry. We found cans of lentil soup, chili, and pinto beans in her bed today.

Be forewarned! Animals have a sixth sense you know. The end may be near! eek

That reminds me, we ordered some GS Cookies from one of our neighbors and they were supposed to be here 2nd week in February. Maybe the snowfall and "County Snow Emergency Levels" have delayed the shipments.

When a GSD is ill it will usually retrieve the FAK from wherever you misplaced it, open it up and start to self-medicate. That's if the owner has properly trained them and gotten their EMT certs. Otherwise they just ignore it and wait for it to go away.

Having had GSD's around for all of my life, I can attest to one sure thing:

You better hide the can opener, cause you ain't gonna like the results if she gets into the beans and chili...

You figure it out.

Haven't you ever heard of cooking with natural gas?

Just gotta say, when my German Shepherd got into the beans and chili, I REALLY wished for the sulphur smell of natural gas rather than what he was putting out ......

LW (Feeling a bit green around the gills just thinking about it) sick laugh

I've had one or two Dobermans living with me for close to 40 years and I learned the hard way NEVER, EVER to leave the kitchen towel attached to the handle on the fridge! Some things are just better off not learned.

Methyl Mercapatan (Odorant added to Natural Gas) smells like roses compared to my GSD following injestion of any kind of beans. Heaven forbid she eat chili or spaghetti sauce. The area rapidly becomes an hazardous atmosphere. sick

Those situations are probably the REAL reason that candles were invented.

Or not.

"Honey, you put the tent back up while I gather the supplies again. But this time the dog stays outside!"

No, but a few days ago we noticed an attempt at can opening on a can of tuna. Pretty impressive tooth dents in that can, but ultimately futile.

We found a bag of peanuts in her bed this evening. At least she's going for variety!

Some years ago I had a GS/Lab mix. He was the strongest dog I've ever seen. He once ate an intact can of catfood by squeezing it flat and sucking the food out thru the holes his teeth punched in the can. His favorite stick to play with was an 8' 2x4. He also used to climb a 6 foot high wire fence to visit his favorite [censored], er, favorite lady dog friend.

My current dog only thinks he's that tough.

Just got the latest issue of National Geographic. The cover story is on wolves. Excerpt from discussion on observations of one of the Yellowstone packs:

"Our afternoon survey leads to a trampled-down rendezvous site. The Dutch pack has dragged in ceramic shards, cans, pots, pieces of iron tools from abandoned homesteads in the park. Canine junk collectors. Who knew?"

I asked my dog about that, and she just yawned and said, "If you don't have tennis balls, what are you going to do???"

Our GSD thinks its a lot more fun to be fed by mom and dad instead of having to forage for himself.

We used to have another GSD that would help himself to whatever was on the counter. I think he had a sweet tooth -- one time he went for an entire plate of brownies.

Sounds familiar, last night I was marinating some beef I had just cut up for stir-fry, went into the living room for just a minute and hear our coonhound lapping at the bowl. In the matter of 30 seconds he had eaten half the bowl of meat. We had to come up with something quick (hamburgers), since there was only enough left for two.
