Hot Jello Drink

Hot Jello Drink - 11/06/09 01:44 AM

I read a few older posts on here about hot jello and it sounds cool to try. Anyone know the ratios on it? As in make as the box lists but drink hot instead of refrigerating or 1 packet per 3 cups water...etc?

Soylent cow and pig:

http://www.kidzworld.com/article/727-how-jell-o-works

"The gelatin in Jell-O is made from the collagen in cow or pig bones and skins. Contrary to popular opinion, hooves and horns aren't often used to make gelatin. Manufacturers grind up these animal parts and use acid, and alkali chemical processes to break down the cellular structures and release the collagen. Next, the mixture is boiled. The stuff that forms a layer on top is gelatin."

Yum!

Growing up, our mom would pack us a thermos of hot Jell-O when we'd go ice fishing. She'd make it just like regular Jell-O, but pour it into the thermos while hot, preventing it from setting up. It did a great job of helping us keep warm.

It used to be very popular with the backpacking crowd, as a fast morale and energy boost on one of those days when hypothermia creeps up behind you.

I didn't mind it, but I could make instant cocoa with instant coffee just as fast, and get sugar plus caffeine while setting up the rest of camp and cooking supper. (Later in life, discovered that a tot of whisky or black rum in the above would solve most problems, provided my body core was good and hot.) Plus I didn't get that very odd lime-flavoured goo on my teeth and tongue.

We used to drink hot jello regularly when I used to do a lot of ice climbing & mountaineering. It was the original gatorade! We would mix one package to a quart of water, and that seemed to work fine for us. It really gives you a nice little energy kick, and is better than drinking plain old hot water...
