News ticker from August 25th, 2009:

The Florida governer declared a state of emergency today in the aftermath of hurricane Schwarz following the total destruction and loss of three emergency supplies warehouses due to tornadoes, fire and flooding. The early season Class 5 storm system also knocked out power to more than half of the Florida peninsula today, and estimates are it will take 2 weeks for power to be restored to Miami.

May the Schwarz be with you...

And so it began.
I guess when the first storm takes out your emergency preparations that should be a warning of sorts.

All kidding aside, where would you locate a Florida logistics center?

I assume they based this in Orlando for the same reason Disneyworld is in Orlando - location, location, location. 40 miles inland at least means no storm surge, and a much reduced hurricane if it tracks directly over you. Any Class 5 becomes a Class 3 over that much land. Not much (as much) chance of your logistics warehouse coming tumbling down.

In a state as low and close to the sea as Florida, you makes your choices, takes your chances...

Good to know, thanks Izzy. My point of course is that Orlando is far enough inland for any hurricane to dissipate, and is as safe as anywhere else for a Florida logistics center. Except Georgia of course, but that's someone else's response, not Florida's.

How well do you think the SLRC would cope with a Cumbre Vieja Volcano event?

Like most of the eastern seaboard, not very well. This once in 10,000+ year catastrophe is not reason enough not to cache supplies to respond to disasters that tend to strike Florida several times a year.
