Just got back from three days camping - 03/02/09 06:01 AM

It was the windiest camping trip I recall. We had very regular 15-30 mph winds with gusts to 50 mph. One Coleman tent was killed. Fortunately it was a spare tent our friend was setting up for the kids to play in. During set up, the wind gusts pushed it down so much, one or two poles broke.

Setting up the two 20x20 EZ Corner dining flies was an adventure. At one point during set up, a gust almost took it. That was kind scary as it started to go and reached significant elevation only anchored by one guy holding on with one hand. I was afraid of the landing as all those pipes are heavy. We strategically placed it using a buried pipe as one anchor point for a corner of each of the flies. Once lashed in place, I felt a little better. All the other corners were guyed out using ratchet straps and rebar pounded in really deep. We had pre-made loops of rope that were spliced for strength and prussiked the rebars to attach the ratchet straps. It was very secure albeit loud in the wind. The wind was so strong that one of the steel pipes in the fly structure bent!

Anyway, sleepy now so I'll post pictures hopefully during the week.

Sounds "fun." I did a trip like that once when I was 8. Winds so strong that my parents were cooking and brought me food in the tent - I was the tent weight to ensure it didn't fly away.

We soon thereafter walked out, since the gusts of 60-70mph were too... gusty, I guess.

Amazing how a little extra wind causes so much extra havoc, huh?
