New Altoids Tinns

Has everyone seen the new Altoids tins yet? These are the unhinged round ones for the new Citrus Sours flavors. I'm in the process of trying to think up new uses for them. It seems like they would be good for wire saws or fishing line. Anyone else come up with an idea yet?<br><br><br>Chris

Looks like a gret tin for carrying a 10 meter dipole antenna for my portable HF rig. Great for easy deployment in EmComms situation.

I was informed yesterday that REAL COWBOYS have the faded pocket outline of a SKOAL container in their jeans pocket. Happily, I gave up tobacco early in life. Perhaps this can be a substitute? That, or Ill just put this drugstore hero on a certain horse named Smily. Storing wire in a square tin is a problem. Fishing line will relax with use, but unless it's the soft brass wire for survival it's a pita. This may be the solution. How is the candy?

Chris: The sours are okay. Not my cup of tea but a nice treat. The tin will definitely provide the outline in your pocket though.<br><br>Minime: That's a good idea. You could put a Smite QRP rig in a conventional Altoids tin and have quite the set up. Of course those only come in 80 and 40 meters so you will have to pack more wire.<br><br>Chris

I'm working on putting together a tuna tin 2 in a regular altoids but I want to modify the circuitry to handle 10 meters. Any ideas? Sources? Haven't heard about the smite rig so I guess I'll go do some googling. you got a URL?

Well, being from South Africa, I don't have a clue what an Altoid is....LOL....is this a brand name? a new knid of pet? a new disease?...Just kidding..just kidding!!!!!...LOL. We have virtually nothing in tins here other than very expensive sweets in round tins, which I find quite handy for all sorts of things. I have my PSK in an oooooooold Strepsils tin. This is a cough lozenge made by Boots pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately they no longer use tins for this. Tobacco tins are also hard to come by here, although they are still found if you look hard. Most things come in plastic or paper O(. Who manufactures Altoids? Can we get some here? If for nothing more than for the tins!!!!

That's the same in my country (Poland). Altoids-like tins are perfect size and shape for a small PSK, I spend a lot of time to find one. Then I only had to discard the candies because i did not like them . I tried other containers before, mostly soft type (like cell-phone pouch), they are good for EDC, because you don't make a total mess when you remove one item (if you didn't pack them too tightly).

these are great for your PSK.
i use several of them .
one contains a small fishing kit.
one contains a small first aid kit
one contains a h20 procurement kit. (h2o tablets, 6 condoms, 12 inches of fish tank tube for a straw)
one contains a fire starter kit.
one contains a sheet of 2 mil poly (plastic) and 4 pcs. of string for shelter.
all of these tins fit perfectly in a sports bottle holder and clips to my lbh or belt or pack. only problem with them under certain weather conditions the are not water proof so i keep the in a freezer type ziploc bag in the pouch.
hope this offers some interesting advice.

To waterproof those tins you should just get electrical tape and rap it around the tins, and the tape could also be used in a survival situation. It's a 2 for 1 deal. <img src="images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

dont forget, use good electrician tape ! the cheap one's leaves very nasty residue !

That cheap kind also melts. I used the cheap kind on the handlebars on one of my bikes and with use, the warmth of my hand and sun made that stuff slip off and leave a very sticky black residue, but I eventually replaced the grips. <img src="images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
