anyone feel drowsy at end of workday? - 12/18/07 08:23 PM

Does anyone often feel drowsy at end of workday?

I frequently feel drowsy during the day despite that I get 8hrs of sleep. Is my body lacking some critical minerals/ vitamins that cause drowsiness?

I already consulted my doctor but he couldn't diagnose my problem. I have to take wakeup caffeine pill to stay awake during work.

Will all due respect, if a physician who has examined you is unable to diagnosis any detectable health problem, why would you think members of the forum are able to so?

Perhaps a consult, examination and laboratory testing with another physician will serve you better.

First off let me say that the human body naturally wants to sleep mid-afternoon, our workdays do not fit our natural cycles. However for most people this is not a serious problem.

As you have seen a doc already try the simple things first; 8 hours sleep is the recommend minimum, some people are quite happy on less, but you could try getting a bit more and see if that helps. You could also try an energy snack mid-afternoon such as a banana or something similar, these can work better than caffeine for some people. If still not joy and if you are seriously drowsy then as Pete says seek a second opinion from a specialist physician.

Hi Picard,

Have you bought a CO detector yet?

It seems in the last month or so you have suffered from headaches, vomiting, cold or flu (“I am sick with cold or flu. I threw up in the car while driving home. my head feels dizzy and I can't walk to the washroom to drink water.”//” I have some sort of flu. Do you guys have flu this month? I have regular headache. My head feels dizzy.”), drowsiness perhaps due to medications (“how do you guys tell the boss that you are on medication? The meds cause my drowsiness not laziness. I work hard, furiously but my meds cause my fatigue near end of the day. I don't want to lose my job.”) and dry eyes (“Do your eyes get more dry in the winter than warmer season? I am just curious about this subject since my eyes might have that problem.”), perhaps a complete physical with lab work performed by an Internist or other Medical Specialist would be beneficial.

I used to be pretty pooped at the end of a long graveyard shift, but "regular" shifts, no. What do you do for a living? Something fun and active, or do you sit at a desk, in your own little cubicle, pushing boring papers around. That would have me yawning after the first 30 minutes...

My doctor did a through test of my health. It seems that I was infected with a stomach flu virus instead of common flu, rhinovirus. Stomach flu virus cause vomiting instead of a fever.

Do you snore??

Sleep apnea is a disorder that is caused by a variety of things which wake you slightly from a deep sleep. It breaks your sleep pattern yet you probably do not notice it. Snoring is a very strong indication, but the only way to tell is with a sleep study.

google sleep apnea for more detailed information.

In the past year or so I've noticed that I am able to nap at the end of the work day. For various reasons I do not get a full 8 hours of sleep most weeknights, and end up sleeping in a bit more on the weekends, both of which set me up for the "groggies" at about 4:00 pm or so. It would be prudent for me to get to bed sooner, keep a regular sleep schedule, and not have to travel quite so much. Hotel beds and time changes screw me up for sleep a lot as well.

Just for your education, Rhinovirus is associated with “the common cold”, not “the flu”. “The flu” is caused by Influenza. Gastroenteritis (“stomach flu”) is unrelated to both, and is attributed to several viruses and other factors.
