req: para cord break point tip - 11/03/07 11:45 AM

A year ago or more someone posted a tip on how to create a breaking point in para cord (Think it was Chris K)by taking out the inner cord, bending it I believe and burning the two ends together. However I cant find the post anymore and I want to see if I got the details right... who can help?

Regards,
Ryan

Ryan:

If you are going to use it for a neck lanyard after you get the right lenth and seal the end ( burn ) take a piece of shrink tube and cut about 2In. and use that as your weak link. Or you can leave the ends of the lanyard open and make it easyer to get the inter cores with out additional cuting,or shorting of the lanyard.

In the field I'm using a piece of steel wire to crimp a ring (or a short spiral) around two melted into mushroom-cap shape smile ends of paracord coming toward each other. It's also allows to adjust the force of breaking (add more wire coils), and the length of lanyard if necessary.

Something like this:

I did mine on a neck lanyard for my knife by running a few stitches through the overlap. I tested it and it breaks at about 10 pounds which seems right for this application.

Big al, what do you mean by shrink tube?

I'm not Bigal but you can buy shrink tube where you buy eletrical conections. Its a plastic tube you cut to ltngth and slide on to the wire (or in this case paracord) and apply heat to it and cause it to shrink and squeeze the wire tight to make a water tight seal around a splice.

Be sure to buy cheap shrink tubing. Expensive stuff has a coating of resin on the inside that melts into wire to ensure a waterproof seal...it's sorta like hot glue. Use that stuff and you'll glue the ends together.
