Wax Dipped Magnesium Coated Cheetos - 08/17/07 07:54 PM

Has anyone here on this forum had a chance to test out wax dipped magnesium coated Cheetos as a firestarter? We discussed this several months back but nobody had actually tried it.

Anybody willing to give it a try and report back to the forum?

Thanks!

Hi Colbyhouse

Strange that you should mention the cheesy snack as I have recently watched the results of the cheesy snack obsession on a TV diet/health show programme. There was this chap who was fond of cheesy wotsits (UK version of Cheetos). He was in a right state, he looked like an overweight alcoholic with serious acne, bright red face (especially his nose) with a multitude of blistering pustules all over his face. The presenter of the diet/health show duly lit a cheesy Wotsit in front of him much to his surprise! (poor guy had a fatty liver and stage 2 diabetes but after refraining from his favourite cheesy snack for 3 months had lost 3 stone and now looked completely fresh faced).
I don’t know whether this chap had a magnesium deficient diet but if the cheesy stack were to be dipped in edible candle wax and the dusting of magnesium was refrained from, then the cheesy fire lighter could double up as an emergency food source (if only for a short period and only in the most dire circumstances).

That's an interesting idea - ommitting the magnesium and just using the edible wax coating on the cheeto for a fire starter and a fuel source - at least the cheeto would stay crispy coated in wax!

I'm waiting for the next full moon to light off a supply I assembled via an aluminum coke can polished with chocolate. Of course the things will ingnite. So will half the contents underneath my kitchen sink. This is fun stuff for assembling mailbombs to whoever cancelled MacGyver. I did it ( no, not he mailbomb.)It was most gratifying, seeing the magnesium bar and a snack food I hate burning like victims of the Spanish Inquisition. I'll stick to my bic lighter, held high as a rational choice, singing 'Theres a light' from Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Only thing Cheetos might be good for is firestarting, I sure wouldn't eat one of the nasty things...

I would think PJ and cottonballs would be better, more versital and durable. I am not sure if you can light your idea with a Ferrostick as you need a concentration of Mg to spark into. Also if smashed then the cheetos etc would make just a goo. I'll stick with PJ and cottonballs tried and proven.
cheers

Yeah, but nowhere near as tasty (with apologies to OBG).

Some people will eat anything. My daughter eats them, and I still love her...

Maybe I just have an evil turn of mind...

Will wax dipped magnesium coated Cheetos pass through airport security? Are they likely to be confiscated? They are? I wonder what the chances are that one of the TSA agents would eat them?
[evil laugh, rubbing hands together...]

"But Officer, I just don't understand. He ATE my firestarter kit? And could you please explain how this was MY fault???"

Now this is my idea of a survival item: they're waterproofed in a durable mylar type bag suitable for use as a drinking cup or to hold a multitude of items, they're high in fat for concentrated energy, and you can use 'em to start a conflagration if need be. It wouldn't surprise me if they even glowed in the dark. BTW, I love those crunchy cheesy little gutbombs.
