Gerber EAB folding razor - 02/05/07 07:29 PM

Sorry if this is old news to anyone but I was at Wallyworld the other day and ran across this little gem. It was just under $10 and the quality is excellent for the price. It could easily fit in a PSK and doesn't take up much more room than just the blade. The liner lock smoothly and solidly engages and disengages. If you want to trim it down even more (weighs 2.2 oz.), it looks like the clip can be removed fairly easily.

Does it take the standard utility knife blades?
How solid is the single Phillips screw bracket?

After this thread , I stopped carrying my box cutter and got an EAB. I went straight to ACE and got a longer screw and a nut to use it as a stud so I can open it one handed.

1) yes, it takes regular blades. also on the forum above are "better" blades
2) The screw is secure IF you have a blade in it. The threads on the screw are pretty shallow, hence longer screw.

Do you remember what size screw it takes, or did you drill out the exsisting threads to allow the bolt/nut to hold the blade? I'm thinking maybe 6-32 or so?

I've been trying to find one of these! I went to my local Wal-Mart in Southern NJ and they did not have them; but an employee cheerfully pulled out his personal one he said was given to him by a friend. I called Gerber and a helpful lady there said they're new and to check in a few months. And if I couldn't find one they would be available from one of their distributors.

Sorry, but I don't get the "razor" part of this. I don't think I'd try to shave with this thing.

I have just recieved one of these myself. The bolt that i used was a 4/40 x 3/8 (they didn't have any 1/4 bolts where i was shopping) and one nut. I put the nut on the bolt and tightened it to the head of the bolt and screw it in the hole the opposite way that the original philips screw was. The only problem that i had was the bolt was too long and hit the clip on the backside not letting the blade fully close. well in about one minute with the file of my SAK Ranger (using it like a saw not as a file) it was now a 1/4" bolt. The cost of the new thumb stud was .10$ .05 for the nut and .05 for the bolt.

What would one use this razor for in a survival situation?

I use the EAB for everyday box opening type things to keep my "real" knife blade sharp for when I really need it.

In your survival kit it would be as useful and safer than a scalpel blade.

Thanks for the bolt details, I'll pick one up this weekend and do the modification.

P.S. I loved your response: "cutting stuff", short and to the point, couldn't have said it better myself!
