GPS, radio and camera and headlamp are more work related. Very often I'm "on call" officer and my guys are known to do retarded stuff so I kind of have to just pick up and go. Depending on what it is (accident, exposure, tough job) I need to be able to stay in touch, get there, fix it, document it and survey. I found out that carrying all of it is the only way to save time and getting job done. I was trying to leave it in the car, home, base, locker but it never worked out. That's why I love colder months since some of it can go into my jacket.

Yeah I read all of them and I was really psyched about the movie. I liked it and soundtrack is amazing too. Mr. Cussler sold rights to total of three books but he was so unhappy with the way that "Sahara" turned out that there is a law suit pending out there.

There is a movie also based on his book "rise the titanic" but I never seen it and I heard that it is not so good.

Is your watch a Doxa? If so, where did you find one with a blue face? That’s very cool. Would it be possible to see a closer picture of it?

It's a Doxa Caribbean 750t... It was a limited edition run I think limited to 250 pieces. You can still find them on ebay or watch forums without much overhead. I think I'm one of the few guys out there who acctually decided to EDC it. Originally I wanted the orange faced one but when I saw the blue one I loved it. I still ended up buying the orange version year later

I've carried an All-Ett wallet for years. Best ever. Only drawback is they need replacement every 1.5 years or so, I find. But it's definitely the best wallet out there for size and convenience!

I had another question is your Buck/Strider an ATS34 or S30V ? Also how is the Buck model diferent from the Strider; besides the price of course?

It is ats34. It is much cheaper alternative to full make Striders and much less crying/anger if you loose one. My Strider GB is build little better and has a little more solid feel to it than the Buck version. But than again I've been using both knives for a while now and have no complaints. But anyway if I didnt have the strider I still would be happy with the Buck and I do believe that there is certain amount of hype around Strider blades which keeps the price at higher level.

Yes, I'm sure Strider is a great knife but, I have to wonder if were not just paying for their new CNC machines. I'll pay the 1400.00 for a Doxa but not 400. or 500. for the Strider. Come to think of it thats a lot for a watch too.....LOL

Paying premium for premium gear has always been a great controversy all over forums. War between fans of Strider vs Spyderco vs Buck vs SAK vs whatever knife brand you like has been going on forever. Same went for flashlights as why pay $120 for Surefire or Gladius or HDS when $10 Maglight would do. And of course why not get a casio g-shock or seiko instead of omega or rolex which will do exactly the same job.

In the end I was lucky enough to have some expandable income that I was able to put into some premium gear and when some of it proved to be worth it others were just a waste of money. But in the end it is your personal choice of what to get and don't fall into the trap that more expensive is better since I learned that lesson with Kifaru packs the hard way. I just wish I had most of my cash back that I blew searching for a perfect light, knife, pack etc etc... <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> but at least it was fun.

But the thing that makes me really angry are people who won't even talk to you unless you have certain kind of gear. In order to join the special exclusive society you have to own exclusive gear otherwise you are not worth somebodys time. I guess idea that somebody maybe can't afford such gear or doesnt need it is unacceptable. And sometimes your skills are perceived as diminished becasue of the gear you own since as an expert you should have known better.

I kinda figure you likely can do without the very top of the line, but I'm not a fan of the low-end. One quote I've heard is that if you're working with a small budget, you can't afford to replace second quality gear when it breaks.

Of course, that's a nice quote and all, but you really have to take each piece into consideration. Some gear covers multiple functionality. And some gear you'll always break, regardless of price or quality. And any gear you can lose, or lend to a friend who lends it to a friend and you never see it again. I've broken and lost $450 paddles. Now I just use cheaper ones because I know any of them will break. (though that nice paddle was freakin NICE.)

I guess I’m a little more critical of paying a lot for a knife because I’ve forges my own, and bought far more than my share starting at age 6 with though little .49 cent jobs from 7-11.
After all is said and done the really value of a thing is not what he or she or anybody sets on it, but how much you or I think it's worth and are willing to fork over.
I once saw this really cool cross necklace (in my younger day when I wore such things) that was $40.00 I tried for two days to talk this guy down in price; he wouldn’t move; but I just had to have it.
So I give him all the money I had at the time. I wore it for two days and it turned my skin green; it seems brass will do that to you.

But isn’t that the excitement of living in the physical world, all the new things to see, taste, and feel. I don’t know about you but I should get a job being a gear tester……LOL

Yes but than I think there are very few honest reviewers out there. I always buy a "backpacker" and "outside" magazine to look at new and coming up recommended gear and realize that a lot of good stuff is being bypassed because manufacturer failed to send in a free sample to a magazine or maybe mediocre review is being given because manufacturer never invited anyone for night out or lunch. I know how much that affected our camera sales when I worked behind the counter long time ago, for a free t-shirt or a key chain I was willing to sell you junk. Also manufacturers who have a lot of petty cash available and shower reviewers with gifts and free stuff usually get the most favorable write ups. Maybe I just become cynical and an old goat over the last few years but I see it more and more especially that I use most of the gear to do real work instead of just local park walking. Also there is a lot of crappy or just average equipment out there that is being hyped out of proportion by somebody who has ?internet authority?. I guess posting on the web and writing articles does make you an expert on stuff even thou the last time you used the equipment was about 10 years ago to sharpen a pencil. But I do love the web reviews because there is always somebody like me or you writing about stuff that went good or wrong. Unless of course it doesn?t sit well with the moderator and you get banned so you just go someplace else (like me and Doxa for example <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ). But we can do with few honest reviewers who are not affraid to write how it is without fear of being out of the job for writing the truth.

I grew up with firm belief that leather/wool/silk and surplus army gear are the way to go in any outdoor activity. I than discovered technical clothing such as fleece and Gore-Tex. I bought on sale a fleece top, vest and rain jacket from company called Lowe Pro. Never looked back on surplus stuff again. That was almost 7 years ago and I still have the items. Now if you look around in the US, Lowe Pro is not really up there when it comes to climbing/technical gear. Why? Because they made excellent gear but didn't want to stroke the reviewers. They believed in making quality gear with keeping the price low which should have earned them a proper reputation. Well they failed. A lot of other manufacturers who managed to "place" their product in proper spot by giving it away were getting a spotlight even thou their gear was average.

Beside the usual stuff, in our family, we all also carry foam earplugs. My wife was at work recently when the fire alarm went off. It was a false alarm but the maintenance guys were unable to reset it. It rang for over a half an hour. She was the only one in her office with hearing protection.

I am quite interested in the lack of any mention of effective defensive survival tools. Does anyone carry 15% OC spray or handguns? Are either allowed in your state?

You can see in the picture of my PSK a canister of Punch II pepper spray. I also have a SureFire G2 on my belt alt all times. A Leatherman Charge Ti is not really a weapon but it could be used as a sort of brass knuckles; the steel fist of Leatherman <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

The best weapon is your head and feet. Distract and get the hell out of there.

Using your Leatherman (or anything else) as "brass knuckles" in a conventional type punch can be as hard on your knuckles as the other guys noggin'. A better way is to use it, or your Surefire, as a yawara stick. One good downward blow can break the badguys collar bone, and the attached arm will be out of action for a while...

No more the kids are to precious and "less lethal" is no longer required do to the change of Oklahoma Law. No requirement to retreat. I have a CCW and also refuse to go anywhere unarmed. Too many loonies in the world. I live off I-40 and you never know what kind of folks are coming off the freeway. The area also has a Meth problem which has turned once reasonable people into crazies.

I now don't EDC the fully serrated first-response knife anymore, but I carried it mostly when working as a trainee wth fire-departements, E.M.S., etc.
It's a good knife for punching in windows and cutting seatbelts (and even a soft-top roof ), but not really for everyday use.

Well, I have to wear a suit most of the time, so I can't really carry all the gear on me that many of you have listed as EDC, at least not without creating a stir. I try to keep a lot of other stuff available at the office, home, and vehicles, but, those kits will wait for another day. For now, here's what came out of my pockets when I took the "business uniform" off tonight. It's more like stealth EDC.



For virtually any activity other than going to work, I'll have a lot of other things available. This is my bare minimum. Maybe I can go through the daypack, and the butt pack one of these days and take some pictures.

What is the organge thing on top of your wallet?

That's a refillable butane lighter. It's made by Solo. It has a nice strong jet flame, good in windy conditions, and it has a little heft to it, because of the metal case. It's been dropped plenty of times and still works! A couple other nice features are the mirror inside the cap (small, but, it would attract attention) and a compass on top. (Again, just a small button compass, but it is liquid filled and surprisingly accurate.)

I think I bought it at West Marine actually, a few years ago. Wind is a big problem on boats, I bought it for fusing the ends of lines when doing splicing on the boat, but, it has become a regular item for me now, rather than just on the boat.

Here's the latest. I don't carry both the Benchmade 707 and Charge Ti at the same time.

I carry a .32 Seacamp semi auto in my rear pocket in a small leather, suede side out holster to hide the profile. I have a CC permit. Plus wallet, knife, leatherman, mini bic lighter, pen and paper, and sometimes a mini first aid kit, but not religiiously.

My Seacamp might sometimes, rarely, be swapped out with a .38 snub revolver, but so much more conspicuous, and uncomfortable that I prefer the .32 and it has never been needed, nor noticed, but has been a source of great comfort on just a few occasions.

I haved thought more than once about getting a .32 Seacamp. How do you like it?

The .32 colt hammerless that I occasionaly carry is great at 15 feet or less and is comfortable to carry in my back pocket. It makes a great secondary (hidey) gun as well, in the field.

Is that the Strider SMF folder? If so, is it worth the price tag?

I have an OMC (pre-AMT) .380 Backup that I have carried in a hip pocket holster off and on for years. I like it just fine, but it is a single action semi-auto, I have always been interested in the Seacamp for its size and action...

I see you carry a spare batteie the same way as I do. Does anyone have some other ideas on where to store a batterie??

Just drop it to one of your pockets. It's already in rugged, dust and water resistant container.
A little better option is to attach a piece of elastic band in some rarely occupied spot in your pocket to eliminate bulk. The very nice spot (Ok, - for me) in the jeans-like pants is the space near the fly, at the very top spot of the pocket. A lighter, battery, or something like that - wouldn't be noticeable, not from inside, not from outside. It's not that much of a work to upgrade most of you outdoor clothes this way.

I love it. Perfect for every day carry, not overly accurate beyond 20 feet, no sigts to snag on clothing. A little picky on the ammo it likes, but there are a lot more options available now. When I got mine, almost 10 years ago, silver tips were about it, and it likes em. Well made, and easy to conceal.

And it's not just a jacket, it is really an EDC System! I love modular designs and magnet closures. The only problem is that it's easy to get lost in 52 pockets and compartments sometimes .

I bought one of those. It was a Coleman brand and it died shortly after I bought it.

Sorry to hear that, I wonder if it's made by the same folks? Did it have an accident? Mine is made by Solo. I guess Coleman probably could have rebranded it, or it could be another manufacturer. Mine's still giving good service, and really has been banged around alot. I use a premium butane to refill it, but, other than that, haven't done anything to it.

Sorry that you had trouble with yours from Coleman, but, they may just replace it if you bring it back. We have a Coleman outlet near us that took back a tent that had a defect, a defect that was severely stressed due to some Boy Scouts that aren't patient with tent zippers. Still, they took it back with a smile and gave us a new one.

Over the weekend I visited my local REI for the first time and picked up a few odds and ends (no, really, I only spent $16 total!)

My favorite is the Swiss-Tech ScrewzAll, a tiny solid stainless steel tool with 4 rather robust little screwdrivers on it that are far superior to those on my Bucktool. I added it to my EDC by attaching it to my keychain.

I never forget what I EDC. It's all in my pockets, so I see it every day when I put on my pants, plus I use it all on a regular basis, otherwise I wouldn't bother carrying it.

Sometimes I forget what I have in my briefcase, but that's because I don't use it all every day.

I have a bob and car kit so I don't feel I need alot for everyday items as I'm usually not more than 200ft from one or other. I keep swapping out items with me depending on my "needs" or area I'm going to. eg. When not at work I swap my swiss lite for full blown swiss army or multitool, extra battery for razr, I may bring a small/basic fsk, extra tinder and wire saw if i have a coat, or swap my flint with the small lighter (pictured).

I could not find a source of Fresnel Lens (and some other small survuval tools) in Canada which lead me to purchasing the DR/AMK PSK which has many compact items in it for a reasonable price.

Since then I have found credit card size Fresnel Lens at electronic stores, I think a pack of 2 cost about $5.00.

Last summer I recieved a mass mailout from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and in it was a very thin Fresnel Lens, a nice "Thank You" for a donation; I now carry this lens in my wallet.

Yes, for lack of a better answer. I pretty much take it everywhere and live in NYC.

I also normally carry a cell phone and my wallet.

My teenage son tends to be more than a little skeptical about "survivalist" issues, viewing an interest in such issues as little more than an eccentric hobby, like collecting miniature toys or keeping bees (no offense intended to all you toy collectors and beekeepers out there). After visiting another site (NOT this forum) over several days his reaction was "These guys are preparing more and more obsessively for events that are less and less likely. Who is ever going to need this stuff?". On the other hand, he is concerned with basic preparedness, believing that people should be prepared for the rough edges that we all occasionally rub up against while going through our daily lives. When we were talking about this last night, he mentioned that experience had taught him to be prepared for particular things, and that he always carried some stuff with him when he was out (school, movies, hanging with friends, etc.). In effect, this was his EDC, although he would never think to call it that. So, here's what one fourteen year old carries every day on his person.

In a Maxpedition Urban wallet:
-1 Wet-Nap cleansing wipe
-1 antiseptic towlette
-1 1.75 x 4 adhesive bandage
-1 .75 x 3 adhesive bandage
-2 extra strength Tylenol
-2 sheets Rite-in-the-Rain note paper

When I asked him if he ever used this stuff, he said that during a big storm last week he used the Photon light when the power failed at his friends house, and that he used both an antiseptic towlette and a large adhesive bandage on a friend who crashed his bicycle and cut his shin.

I wanted to say "How about some duct tape" or "You really should carry (fill in the blank)", but in the end I kept my mouth shut. This is his thing, and it isn't that weak an EDC for a suburban teenager.

Another forum I frequent (about paintball) had a thread like this asking what everyone carried on their person. In general the male teenager's EDC consisted of a wallet, phone, and maybe car keys if they were old enough to drive.

It was funny though, to see that those who lived in city/suburban areas had much less of an EDC than those who lived more out in the country. Those who live further out wouldn't dream of leaving their home without a pocket knife and maybe a lighter. They weren't very well received by the "city" kids though. (i.e. "What do you need a knife for? You going to stab someone?") The thread almost had to be closed when one guy in his 20's posted up his EDC and it included a 9mm CCW. Kind of sad to see that so many people were adamantly against being prepared with anything more than a cell phone. I guess being prepared isn't "cool."

I'd say your son is way ahead of most adults, never mind teenagers. He has most of the basic stuff, he's lacking the most in a method of making fire and a cutting implement. (Which he probably can't carry either in school right now anyway.) I'm sure you can persuade him to carry those things when he gets a little bit older.

Not really about being cool or not cool, remember these kids are being told constantly that guns and knives are bad and only have criminal uses. If the message is repeated enough then it sinks in.

I'm pretty much a minimalist when it comes to these things. And since I live in L.A - I don't carry things like a fire starter, tinder, foil etc. Nothing special - but here is my list:

1. sports watch
2. Nokia cell phone
3. small mp3 player
4. 36 oz. water bottle (I make it a habit to constantly drink water - good for the kidneys)
5. pocket note book and compact pen
6. thin wallet w/ I.D cards, bank cards, phone card
7. small "man purse" with change and $10-$20 cash
8. carabiner w/keys, 2 photon lights, cheap little aluminum whistle from REI, and a thermometer/compass (don't really need it - but I just like knowing the temperature)
9. mini L.E.D flashlight
10. small plastic case w/ tweezers and 2 sewing needles (I seem to have really bad luck with splinters)
11. Leatherman Micra
12. Spyderco Rescue 93mm or Spyderco Assist (I really like the light weight and full serrations because I suck at sharpening; also, these knives are not "malicious" looking - so people don't freak out when I happen to take it out to open a package or cut a sandwich)

Unless your jurisdiction has laws more generous than mine, these kits have too many sharps and bangs. Better carry a heavily postage prepaid tyvek envelope big enough to mail home most of your EDC gear when you have to get through a metal detector or on a commercial flight. And that's if you think to hit the mailbox before someone with a badge looks at your stuff and confiscates it.

Gentlemen, are we not civilized as well as prepared? The hygiene category seems significantly under represented. Amazed at how few carry a comb - may have to do with the personal hair situation. Not one condom? No breath mints, Listerine sheets, or bottles of Binaca? No mini toothbrushes?

Likewise, I think at least a nod to the food category is appropriate. I suggest a small hard candy, candy bar, package of jerky, or sport energy gel pack, something to fill that empty stomach while waiting longer than expected in a place where you cannot transform money into something to eat.

food? I always have food... Sorry bout not having a condom... i just dnt think i'll need it... the gum is mint so that counts... I know what to hand what not to carry in the airport, cuz I usually have to get up too early to even think to bring a knife...

I just grabbed one of these for trips where I have to go through an airport. Supposedly, security always misses them, and even if they don't its very cheap. Anyway, I had a gift cert so what the heck, might as well.

Uh, I'm afraid to find out. It is heavier than is ideal. My guess is around 30lbs (and that is without water -- sigh). I do plan to weigh it tho. I'll post when I find out.

Not sure if these pics will work but here goes...

My EDC includes a photon II around my neck, Timex with compass, my keyring and my purse. In addition to comprehensive kits in my car, daytrip backpack and BOB, which always close by, these are with me at all times.

The "purse" is actually an ASOLO Metro. It's not very fashionable but it works for me. Here's a peak inside. (Come on, admit it, you always wanted to look in a woman's purse.)

Just some extra batteries, a pencil and pen, my Blackberry & holder, bandaids for the kids, chapstick, usually a couple of snaplights, a Leatherman Wave, AMK Signal mirror, a couple of granola bars and a memory card with some important info on it and, of course, a wallet with id, etc.

-my keyring with a Garrity mini light, whistle and a capsule with a couple of matches and a candle

-a couple of maxi pads (GREAT pressure bandages!)
-a couple of bandanas

-wire saw (yes, we've melted one before!)

AMK Field First Aid Kit - enhanced with extra bandaids, a mini maxi pad, allergy meds, mini light, condom, and some extra gauze pads.

And there's also a keyring with at least a mini flashlight, SAK, lighter and whistle in my jacket pocket.

Nope. I'm pretty sure if I peeked in DW's purse my face would melt just like the guys at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. There are dimensions in there I dare not explore.

The contents of your purse may be more typical than you think. I carry pretty much the same thing except I have a few extras like a small crank flashlight, 2 handwarmers, the smallest umbrella I could find , (2) 1 gallon sized ziploc baggies and a large trash bag. In the winter I have to carry more handwamers. You'd be surprised how handy those are.

Good call on the bags & warmers - I'm adding them right now. I keep a few things for the kiddos in the outside pocket (they call it my "mama bear pocket".) Diapers, wipes, a soother, dinky car, action figure, etc.. I figure I've got multiple redundancy with lights - although I love crankers! (All my kids have at least one in their packs.) but there's always room for handwarmers - and pack it all in some baggies - duh!

I like the umberella too. I often throw in a couple of those cheapo rain ponchos but a small umberella would be a great addition!

Something I just added to my purse was a small pen sized spray
bottle of hand sanitizer. Wal Mart impulse buy at the register. They must see me coming.

Exactly. There is useful data in this thread for new-comers, regardless of one's feelings towards the threadromancer. A bad mod runs on his feelings not the board rules. There are a lot of threads/posters I leave alone even though they go against my personal beliefs because that's the right thing to do.

Just for the record, I think the moderators on this forum are ...uh,well..., moderate in their approach to controlling the discussion and the threads. For that matter, most of us respond most of the time by mostly keeping our posts moderately civil...

I measure quality in moderation by looking at the quality of the forum. Quality of the forum to me is about half signal:noise ratio and about half courtesy:drama ratio. The best moderators I've known enforce well-written and clear policies, and do so sparingly.

Based on my criteria, this is the most well-moderated web forum I've had the pleasure of participating in.

My apologies for opening a can (thread) of worms. This was never my intention, rather I did not understand the new post that was made.

As a moderator, I believe in keeping mostly hands-off. Life is filled with gray areas and I'd rather let things slip a little over the line rather than crack down on every perceived infraction. In return y'all are pretty good at policing yourselves. I really appreciate that.

by "EDC" i'm taking it you really mean EDC, and not also what i carry in my pack or BOB or vehicles or camping kit or horseback or...

so here's what i ALWAYS have in my front pocket 24/7

SAK Alox Classic, DeanJ Ti peanut lighter, Mako Ti 1xAAA flashlight and a William Henry B09FT Ti folder





and when i leave the house, even for a walk on my own property, i also add a larger locking folder, brighter flashlight and firearm, minimum.

my wife doesn't own a purse - she's a working buckaroo who push cattle around the frontier all day long, so she carries pretty much the same items i do, also in her pockets (but without the pouch which for some reason she doesn't like).

my choices come from 30+ years of living in an off-the-grid mountain wilderness cabin, miles from the nearest neighbor or paved road. these are the tool we found we need on a day-to-day basis, just to survive.

and just cause i like showing off my nicest & fanciest pocket kit, over my cheapie bic-lighter versions, doesn't make me a metro-sexual kind'a guy, does it? :-)

Nice selection of EDC tools, wileycoyote. And welcome to the forum! Are you using the lighter every day? Or just for emergencies? I'm asking because we had a discussion earlier considering the feasibility of a duct tape over the lighter's lid gasket, which should help to slow down the lighter fluid evaporation. Do you have such a problem with yours?

Would it be possible to add an o-ring to help seal the lid?

thnx for the kind words alex. and thnx for the welcome. i've been a huge fan of doug's ETS and this forum for many many years, just haven't been a member.

while i'm not a smoker, i do use it every few days for starting fires in the wood stove, lighting slash piles & burn-barrel fires, melting ends of webbing, sterilizing needles to remove splinters, lighting candles, etc.

the peanut shell i have on the one shown was handmade by a guy over at EDCF named DeanJ (no longer in production) which has a very fine fit between the two halves, yet no gasket. even after 6 months i find i still have fluid in it.

the standard peanuts i have in different survival kits all have o-rings and even they light immediately after six moinths. maybe i'm just lucky...

and i've had better luck with the peanuts over any butane lighter, disposable or high quality.

i've been using these peanuts for a long time. in fact i "discovered" the peanut lighter via a tiny ebay ad in 2007, ordered one from china and was the first to review it in a number of forums, info which helped CC and others to import them for us all.

for those not familiar with them, here are the pixs i did of my first one:

My big gripe with peanut lighters is, I wish they had the attachment point on the other end.

I mean, first, if it accidentally unscrews while I'm walking or whatever, I'd rather loose the cap then the lighter itself. Second, with the smooth body and short OAL of most peanut lighters, they can be a bit tricky to hang onto. If the attachment point was on the other side, I could use the keychain or lanyard as part of the handle to make it easier to hang-onto (and to prevent me from dropping it).

good point, except as it is you can place it under tinder without exposing the other things on your keychain to possible damage/dirt.

I was not so lucky. Both of my peanuts are loosing their juice in about 2 weeks of pocket carry (body heat?) even with gaskets (o-rings) on. So I'm using a piece of ducktape over it - that's fine because as I quit smocking several years ago - I don't really need it on a daily basis.

By the way, just took a shot of my recently reworked EDC piece, which I'm wearing on the belt all the time:

I'm using the Costco's Leatherman Wave set as the kit base, which comes with the AAA Solitaire flashlight (I've upgraded it with LED module) and a pouch. The lighter sits on the bottom of the pouch and is reliably locked in place together with the flashlight by the flashlight lanyard's ring (it's on on both images). I'm using the bright orange ducktape because it's thinner and its surface looks more airtight compared to regular one. Also it's good for marking the trail - very visible.

Another important point - the lighter can stand on its base working as a candle. In fact, I was carrying mine in the jeans pocket on a key chain for several month (before putting the tape over it) - it's never unscrewed by itself.

no idea why your peanuts leak. maybe its a different brand (i imagine there are lots of copies).

tailstanding was one of the reasons i blow a wad on the Ti DeanJ peanut cover i purchased. i believe some of the newer peanut designs do have flat bottoms too, including a couple of the newer stainless and Ti versions.

For what it's worth, I have two Countycomm peanuts and a split pea. When I check them every few months, they light on the first try and won't take more than a tiny bit of a refill.

Finding fuel is usually easy. Sometimes finding flints is hard. An old trick I learned with Zippos is to stick a spare flint in the bottom of the lighter. You lose a little bit of fuel capacity but for me it's worth it.

Pockets:
1. Mobile Smartphone
2. Keys with Whistle, Ritter Pico Light, Tink SAK/USB key
3. Bandanna
4. Lighter
5. Wallet with some money, a metal business card, an SD card and a tiny pencil.

I now wear a Scott eVest everywhere. It looks like a regular jacket.

In there you'll find morestuff, including:

a. Charging cable for smartphone
b. Backup USB Battery for charging stuff
c. Leatherman Wave
d. Flat Duct Tape
e. Small FAK
f. Foldable Nylon Bag
g. Pens, Pencils, Rite in the Rain pad.

and other stuff that I think is better to have and not need than to need and not have....

i do the same thing, carrying spare flints in the bottom of the body.

one place i scrounge spare flints is in old empty disposable bic-type flint lighters. just rip them apart for the flint once you're sure there's no butane left in them.

First, some note on my clothes.

I'm lucky enough that I don't have to dress up for work. I can pretty much wear what I want, I usually drag my courier bag with me to any meetings I may have, and so have a pretty reliable access to the rest of the gear.

- I always wear good walking/hiking shoes (currently ankle-hight Goretex hiking sneakers as it's spring time and lots of puddles)
- 2x 1 metre lengths of paracord as shoe laces.
- Layered clothes, goretex jacket
- 1+ carabineers hanging from belt loops


On my indoor clothes:
- One of those nurses watches (never could learn to be comfortable with something around my wrist)
- A small LED light
- Leather belt
- A small folding pocket knife, tiny spark generator, small mirror (3x4cm), a small whistle and a 2 gallon oven bag folded and taped to the mirror on my key chain (dubbed affectionately my suicidal survival kit)
- Wallet (apart from random cash and cards, contains insurance info, emergency contact info and important phone numbers on waterproof paper, a fresnel magnifying glass and a few cafeteria coupons that would make good tinder)

Jacket pockets:

- Cell phone (kept fully charged)
- Leatherman Wave and the modified survival holster ( see here, seems to be loading slow as hell today)
- random papers I didn't know were there (for tinder or note keeping)
- pack of tissues, currently 8 large tissues, tinder or (relatively clean) wound dressings.
- Lint

In my courier bag

- 2 carabineers
- Pencils
- Paper (A sketch pad and some random papers tucked inside)
- a 30-litre fabric bag (I’ve carried up to 24 kg with it and no seam broke)
- 5 metres of paracord
- Digital camera
- Mini led-light
- Button compass
- Butane lighter
- Film can with bandages, pain killers, 4 butterfly sutures, dental floss and wound wipes and maybe 5 metres of both 1 cm wide skin tape and 4 cm wide duct tape wrapped around it
- Disposable rain poncho
- Lip balm
- A 0,75l water bottle (refilled at every opportunity, especially before leaving home or office).
- Spare moneys (I have two 20 euro bills and assortment of coins, about 50-60 euros worth in case I forget my wallet or it’s stolen)
- 2 needles and about 20 metres of strong twine
- MP3 player
- Plus there’s currently 8 safety pins attached to my bag.

Thanks. I'm from Finland. At least until I muster the courage/"financial security" and/or wife's support to untie my our boat and sail to the horizon.

And yeah, in the previous post there's the link to the modified holster, but here's the synopsis.

Fitted inside the holster: Signal mirror, sterile scalpel, 5m of fishing line, 6 hooks, 8 split lead weights, a sewing needle, a home-made fire starter (spark wheel from a disposable lighter attached to a tube from a pen, full of cotton + vaseline tinder) and a 2 gallon oven bag (one you fit a whole chicken inside, technically a 2 gallon bag but can hold some 6 litres (1,5 gallons?) so that I can actually close it and carry it.

Also, 3 metres of strong sewing twine loosely stitched to one side. There's approximately and 2 and 3 metres of different tapes and 3 metres of snare wire, wrapped around the lid flap.

Seems a lot larger kit when you write it down, but it basically takes no more space than just the holster (but makes pulling the tool and especially putting it back in more difficult).
