I recently found out that my backup compass needs to be replaced, any suggestions (sighting (bearing) compass only w/lanyard)

You'll be very safe getting the Brunton 15TDCL. This is the very same rugged compass that has been a favorite of outdoorsmen (and women) and geologists for many many years.

Prior to 1996 or so It was sold as the Silva Ranger. It is still made by Silva of Sweden, but sold under the Brunton trademark. Prior to 1996 Silva's compasses were sold in the U.S. through Johnson Outdoors. When Silva bought Brunton back in '96 it turned out that Johnson Outdoors owned the U.S. trademark for "Silva" and would not give it up to Silva of Sweden. Instead Johnson Outdoors started buliding their own compasses and putting a Silva label on them, so ironically products labeled as "Silva" in the U.S. are NOT made by Silva.
