Stickiest adhesive bandages - 08/16/06 07:21 AM

Which brand of adhesive bandages would you say are the stickiest? Keep your wounds secure the best? The worst?

Thanks for any input.

The problem with "sticky" is getting the damn thing off. They also cause many people rashes. A better solution is to use dermatologically neutral surgical tape over the dressing.

Duct-Tape with a gauze pad in it.
But don't forget to shave first

While at my local Walgreens I noticed that one of the major bandage companies (3M or Bandaid or similar - can't remember - old age) does indeed sell duct tape bandages.

Yep, I saw some duct-tape bandages for sale hanging in the tool section in Walmart.

In my experience, Beiersdorf Coverlet are the best. However, I have to admit I haven't tested some of the new ones available in the past few years.

Couldn't say for sure about bandages by brand, but may I suggest using knuckle bandages as opposed to regular adhesive strips. You can always trim them down if you want to, but you gain a far more stable adhesion without that pull-away that can happen with the pad on a regular bandage. Folded in half lengthwise they are a bit thicker than a straight bandage, but, in my limited opinion, of greater utility overall.

I find that Curad fabric ones are the best for me. The adhesive is good, and it's even all the way around the pad. They stay on through quite a bit of abuse, and soap and water.

They're cheap at WallyWorld, about a buck a box. I buy several boxes at a time and put the contents of two boxes into one to save space. Cheap helps, because I tend to get so dirty when I'm working outside, and have to change them frequently because the Filth Factor.

But if you need a pretty tough waterproof bandage TAPE to use with pads or other non-adhesive bandages, look for the rolls of Waterproof Adhesive Tape. You may have to get them from regular pharmacies, as discount places like WW often don't carry it.

Nexcare by 3M are quite good in my experience. The waterproof ones have adhesive all around the pad and do not come off or become contaminated easily. I've sweated outside working with them in the dirt and the wound stays clean and the adhesive doesn't come off very easily (except on the hairiest of spots, they stick well).

Their other styles, like padded/gel, elastic fabric, second skin, etc. have all proven to be excellent and they are cheaper than most of the other brands.

Are you referring to BSN-Jobst brand "Coverlet" adhesive bandages?

Bah, it's not that bad.

Although, I think my balding has moved to other parts. I seem to recall a lot more leg hair when I was younger.

I've had good luck with 3M Nexcare Active Strips. They're a foam Bandaid-style bandage with a good waterproof adhesive. I wore one for several days of a backpacking trip and it didn't come off until I took it off. It covered a sub-surface boil that was constantly rubbed and sometimes damp. It's not very breathable and retains moisture more than most bandages, but if you really have to keep a spot covered, these work well. I'm not sure I'd put it over a infection-prone wound unless I could change it often.

We don't appear to have Beiersdorf as a brand in the UK, but if the interweb is to be believed, Beiersdorf own the Elastoplast brand which is one of the more popular brands here. Are they distinct brands over there? The packaging certainly looks similar to the http://www.spservices.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/91_240/products_id/2401 elastoplast classic brand here.

Could be, but I'd never trust that even identically named products are the same overseas as they are in the U.S., so I can't really say.

Box looks the same. Perhaps there's been a merger or whatever recently.
