"Free" Match containers

"Free" Match containers - 03/15/01 04:44 AM

A free source of match containers. If you know anyone with diabetes ask for the empty test strip vials. Some are metal and others are plastic. They are air-tight and the neat thing is they have a container of silica-gel built into the lid to keep things dry. I try to get Accu-touch vials because they are metal. The only draw back is that strike anywhere matches are to long for some vials. I need to cut about 3/8" off of standard strike anywhere matches. It will hold 35-40 matches. I glue a disk of waterproof emery cloth to the outside of the lid as a striker. They work good to keep your tinder dry also.
Hope this is useful.

Other freebie match cases are 35mm film canisters, prescription bottles and even aspirin bottles. All are water tight and free. :)

Plainsman
Plainsman's Cabin Homepage
Plainsman's Cabin Forums

Another good one is, M&M minni's. They come in a small container like a 35mm film can BUT not quite as big around BUT almost twice as tall. So even the large wooden strike anywhere matches fit with room to add some tinder. It has an attached pop top as well. There about $0.60 - $0.70 and they come filled with M&Ms!!!
I like the blaze orange or yellow. I think I need several, or maybe just need the M&M's.

"Stay Frosty"

All those are great. The reason I like the test strip containers is for the silica-gel insert in the cap. Just extra insurance eveything stays dry.
