My First Aid Kit - 05/01/06 11:25 AM

This is my FAK, used for everyday cuts and scrapes. It has been adapted so it can also be used as a survival medical-kit.

The emphasis is on bandages and dressings( medicines aren't freely available in The Netherlands, so there on prescription)

Contents from upper left corner: 6 gauze pads, 1 space-blanket, 1 triangulair bandage, nylon pouch, ointment pads (no antibiotic), 1 pair vinyl examination-gloves, 10 steri-strip, 2 small quick- dressings, 2 elastic bandages, 10 paracetamol (Acethaminophen) 500 mg, Betadine ointment 30 gr, 1 #22 scalpel blade, 1 small scissor, 1 roll tape, 1 pair tweezers, 1 click-away (itch-refief), 5 safety-pinns, 8 band-aids medium, 1 flexible-thermometer, 1 cpr-face shield, 9 alcohol prep-pads, 1 disinfection wipe, 2 ORS, 1 assortiment of bandages (small/medium/large/finger are all waterproof).
Not displayed, but included is also a 10cm piece of clear plastic tubing.

Any comments?

BTW: This is not the FAK that I use in my larger survival kit.

Maybe switch the gloves to nitrile if you can get them. No latex allergy risks, and I think they are stronger.

Only other thing I a can think of is, this might a good place to stash a spare lighter.

It are vinyl gloves actually, but I don't know if vinyl is stronger than nitrile or if there can be a allergic reaction to vinyl gloves?

I like it.

You might add a lighter, small folding knife, instructions ( for someone else to use the kit) and drop the whole thing in a waterproof box or bag.

It's a FAK, so I don't want to add anything other than FAK- supplies.
I carry a knife and a FSK in my EDC.
The pouch is pretty well stuffed, so I don't think it would even fit!
And there's a scalpel-blade in the kit.

I have a waterproof pouch for it (I didn't photograph it)

Why do you carry a scalpel blade?

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/01/06 04:40 PM

The scalpel blade is good for al sort of things like draining a blister, removing splinters, tracheotomy, etc.

hey jim :great kit, i think you hit the new standard for a small packable IFAK....by the way can you get military style field/trama dressings in the NL...always a good item to have....i carry one in my pocket or taped to my belt when in the field..... vince g. 11b inf

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/01/06 05:43 PM

Thanks for your reply. I hope my kit will become the standard.

Well. I use to have a militairy trauma-dressing (from someone into active service) but I used that in a large MVA. Now I just carry this kit.
The triangular bandage will also double as a trauma bandage. It can be secured with the elastic bandages or tape.

But I don't know if they are available to civillians in Holland.

BTW: if you can get one, maybe it's better to carry a civillian white trauma-bandage?

Do you also carry a medical / FA kit or just that dressing?

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/01/06 06:10 PM

I wouldnt reconmmend draining a blister... the fluid is there to prevent damage to the underlying tissue of the rubbed skin.

A scalpel blade to remove a splinter? <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> What happened to forceps <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

tracheomtry that is good though! Does require expert knowledge and training... (at least before I'd try it when someone in front of me is gasping, panicking and suffocating)

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/01/06 11:02 PM

Jim, this looks too large for an EDC kit. For example. why would you need six dressings or nine prep pads? . I assume, in that case, the kit could be resupplied daily, if necessary. If this was a group kit or you planned to use it for some time in the field, I can see a kit this size.

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/02/06 01:03 AM

I like it, I carry something very similar.

I have small individual ointments instead of the tube, and my scissors are on my pocket knife.

Great job!!

"The emergency bandage" is sold at bever sport.

Millitary bandages sold in stores are usually really really old...

I don't think he said it is a EDC kit.

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/02/06 03:02 PM

It would probably be to large for EDC (on your belt), but it's always with me, if I go to school for example, it's in my school-bag.
The reason there are more prep- and gauze pads is because the kit can also be used (and is oriented) for survival and outdoor- carry.
And if you're in such a situation, it isn't easy to get your kit resupplied, So I carry more of some items.

Jim

Do you have room in the pouch or is it packed full?

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/02/06 03:09 PM

It's pretty well stuffed, so maybe I could get in some small things, but not a lot.
Any suggestions?

Sorry just saw you have elastic banadges so forget the Ace.

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/02/06 03:22 PM

I assume a hemostat is a vascular clamp?
I can't get them, just can't get them. And I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't fit. (The kit is 15 / 12/ 8 cm).
What's an Ace-bandage?
Non-steril gauze pads? Now that's a idea......

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/02/06 03:24 PM

Do you have anything for blisters? An Ace Bandage is the brand name for elastic bandages.

Re: My First Aid Kit - 05/02/06 03:30 PM

I see
What I usually do for blisters is open them up with a scalpel-blade or safety pin, Desinfect it with Betadine salve or a ointment pad and then I put a elastic bandage or tape a gauze pad over it.
All that stuff is in my FAK, but I don't carry special 'blister-stuff' such as Moleskin, etc.

Re: My First Aid Kit - 06/04/06 12:27 PM

I may be going out on a limb here, But then again it isn't the first time I've fell out of the tree.....what about an Exacto knife with extra blades......both sterilized and and put in some kind of waterproof packaging? You would have the Sharpness (Almost) of the Scalpel blade, but with MUCH more control, by way of the added handle?
