Knife minikit with pictures - 03/23/06 01:00 PM

Not to hijack the previous post about a minikit in a knife sheath, I started a new thread. This is based on a Cody Lundin inspired minikit.

This is in addition to the kits we all carry, of course. How we all love redundancy....

You need to add one of the BSA(Boy Scouts of America) firesteels to that kit... It is so small you will not notice it, and the hacksaw blade is PERFECT for striking sparks with it... MUCH better than the *#&Q^%(# that comes with it...
I would not DEPEND on the striker on the lighter, because they sometimes tend to break(BADLY)... The rest is great...

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/23/06 03:23 PM

I like the idea, but why not put the extras in a poouch to wear opposite the knife? More balanced, more room, more comfortable. Or is this not a wearing knife?

It was originally designed (Cody Lundin version) to be worn as a neck knife.

I'm not sure I like the compass & light hanging on the outside of the knife. You might consider making a 3/4" thick pouch the size of the sheath, mount the sheath on the front of the pouch and have everything inside and protected.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/24/06 01:57 AM

This is meant to be a neck carry rig, so the easily accessible compass and led are supposed to be one of the main features. Although, if the entire rig were to take a drink, the photon is toast. Hmm...maybe a gerber infinity ultra....?
Ugh...i feel my neck getting an ache just looking at it! Although the gold chain around some rapper's neck must be tons heavier....

I'm waiting to add a firesteel to the rig, just can't decide which one. Countycom military match, magfire firesteel, BSA type firesteel?.....as you can see, its a work in progress.
Thanks for your comments.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/24/06 04:54 AM

TrustBX,

If you have to light natural tinder, like wood shavings, the bigger ferro rods work much better. You also need to test your scrappers. A good scrapper is more important for making sparks than a particular ferro rod. My Mora knife (back or blade) does not work as well as the back of the saw on my Leatherman Ti. The handle on the MagFire is much larger than on the County Comm Metal Match. I'd go with the Metal Match for around the neck.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/24/06 07:15 AM

Thanks for the advice.
I'm really tempted to get them all and see which works best.
But then, I would need one each for a spare.....
AIEEEE.....i do not need more stuff....i do not need more stuff...i do not need more stuff....

You might consider uploading them to Photobucket (requires an account) or Imageshack (does not). Both allow free hotlinking of pictures and you won't have the "Exceed data transfer" like you do with geocities

Nice little kit ya got there. Somebody obviously read 98 Degrees. Moras are so great for this purpose because they are so light weight. You did a nice job packing that up nice and pretty too.

Can you swing it around and smack it in to a few things, drop it, drag on the ground etc without it coming unravelled? Can you get to all your gear with one hand out of commission? If not then I would make it as such, and I don't think it would take much to make it so, if necessary.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/29/06 03:28 AM

Oh ya... also... is it waterproof?

I would add another firestarter too. Something very small like the ferrocerium rod removed from a Doans MFS... but that's just me.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/29/06 02:39 PM

Trusbx, I have dunked my Photon a few times, and you can just open it up, blow it out and it is good as new. So don't worry too much about that.

Great little kit.

Nice kit. Well done. Redundancy is the mother of... well, I'm sure it's the mother of something.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/29/06 08:42 PM

You know, I'm about half way through his book, and I'm not a huge fan of this idea. I don't like the idea of hanging a hard object around my neck so when I fall all of the impact is compressed into a small space on my chest. I like even less the idea of dangling a fixed blade knife around my neck. I'm sure there are safety features and whatnot, but should that come loose in impact or other adventures (and maybe I'm not aware) that's a rather large liability.

I like the idea of carrying kit and making sure it's accessible, hence my attraction to this site, but I gotta say, I'm not in agreement with either the versatility or the safety of this particular choice of carry.

Could you let us know how it works for "flopping" around during carry, if that big bump is as uncomfortable as it looks, if you've fallen on it how did your chest take the impact, etc. I'm looking for real-world performance of that minikit and any detractors.

And just for way of reason, I have a friend who slid into homeplate and accidentally landed on the ball. It ended up pushing his liver back into his spine, tearing the liver in two pieces and causing massive internal bleeding. I'm not saying this would do that, but I don't think I'm wearing anything against my chest that won't spread the impact a bit.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/30/06 02:22 AM

I agree that carrying this thing about your neck can have some problems like impact injury, knife coming loose, stangulation, chafed skin etc.
I have not tried carrying it abou the neck mainly because of these concerns. I have adapted it with a longer necklanyard to be cross-slung, rather than be a straight neck carry per se.

As to the knife coming loose, the mora sheath is quite snug, and a ranger band holds the handle down to the sheath.

Thanks for the comments.

its the mother of kits A, B and C. Maybe also D and E.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/30/06 02:26 AM

Good suggestion on testing the integrity of the thing.
1. Drag on floor
2. Smash on rock
3. Soak in water.
4. Drop from height.

Will test and see.....
Hopefully the mirror won't break.....

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/30/06 02:29 AM

The butane lighter and tinder are enclosed in a small ziploc and taped to the sheath. We'll see how waterproof it is when i dunk it in a pail of water....
The 'waterproofed' photon should be okay. Maybe I should press n seal the butane lighter too.......hmmm.

I've added a metal match to the neck lanyard in the name of redundant redundancy.....

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/30/06 02:59 AM

I guess you could fashion a shoulder belt out of 550 and make it even more versatile! I'd still be leary about the fixed blade without a sheath that fastens somehow.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/30/06 07:30 AM

That model of Mora sheath has a pretty good "snap in" on it. Hard to describe but it's more secure than it looks.

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 03/30/06 07:41 AM

The nice thing about most disposable butane lighters is that even if they get soaked, they still work once removed from the water and dried relatively well.

Abuse and waterproof testing - 04/01/06 08:18 AM

Ok.
As suggested, i have abused the kit (a little) to see what it could withstand.

Drop test
Dropped 10 times from random heights
Result: mirror is steel. No damage. Paracord wrapping intact.

Impact Test:
Hit 10 times on edge of table. 5 on front and 5 on back of sheath.
No breakage of mirror or butane lighter. Some slippage of paracord and ranger bands.

Drag test:
Dragged all over the floor
The slipped ranger bands and paracord snagged on something on the floor and slipped, exposing the mirror and saw beneath. Other than that, no other damage or loss of items.

Waterproof test:
Sheath with minikit dunked in a pail of water for 30mins.
No compromise of the lighter, tinder, water bags or puritabs. Duct tape flat roll shrugged off this feeble test without incident.

Conclusion:
Needs more tape to secure the paracord on the outside! Also, not a good idea to keep abusing the kit. This kit can stand some abuse but I wouldn't want to push my luck and bust the butane lighter.

These tests were in no way scientifically conducted, recorded or measured, nor are they reproducible accurately. If you think I should have done it scientifically, that's just too bad, as I don't have any time like that on my hands!!

Re: Knife minikit with pictures - 04/01/06 12:41 PM

At the risk of sounding clever: Try the following. 1) Duct tape a small pouch to the scabbard. Put all your nessasarys in a resealable plastic bag in pouch. 2) Speaking from personal experiance, Mora knives are fairly secure in their scabbards. If you want belt and braces security take a 30cm or so lenth of paracord & a snowlock, reef knot the cord to the scabbards belt loop. Take both ends and pass them through the snow lock. Tie a stop knot in the ends. Put the loop this forms over the handle and draw the snowlock closed. Very secure, but can be opened one handed. Knife should be slung cross body on a cord long enough to place it comfortably at you side.

Re: Abuse and waterproof testing - 04/05/06 06:59 PM

Yep that's pretty much the kind of thing I had in mind. Glad to hear that it held up well for the most part. Sounds like a good kit.
