Garrity Glo Lite

Garrity Glo Lite - 02/08/06 08:12 PM

I just picked up a "Garrity Fun-Tastick Glo Lite" at Wals-Mart for just under$3.00 (if I remember the price correctly). It's a LED light housed in a green translucent shell, pretty bright, water resistant, comes with a break-away lanyard, has a small pocket clip attached, and the package claims it'll last for up to 35 hours of continuous use or can also be turned on and off with a twist of the cap to save power.

I thought I would be able to replace the 3 button Cells it uses for power, but the screw cap is tightly glued to prevent access to the batteries. Unfortunately it seems as though this stick is meant to be disposable, which is too bad. It didn't make mention of this on the package unless I overlooked it. Of course I’m betting they would rather sell more lights over the long haul versus selling one in which the batteries, which they probably don’t produce, can be replaced. This also allows them to maintain competitive pricing per unit with chemical lights I suppose.

The Garrity Fun-Tastick Glo Lite I purchased is pretty bright, but I've yet to test it against a standard cyalume chemical glow stick to see if the light output is similar. It is easily enough to read by, and illuminate the immediate area enough to navigate by if necissary.

The Garrity Glo Lite I picked up is green, but they also come in white, blue and red. The translucent housing seems to determine the color rather than the color of the LED itself, which at a guess might be better for brightness in the case of the red and blue versions, but that is pure speculation. I’ll have to pick a few up to test them.

Like most electronic glow sticks the end housing the LED is noticeably brighter, but overall the light spreads well down the length of the tube.

I must admit that I have only limited experience with Krill Lights, Glo Toobs and other similar electronic glow sticks so I can’t compare and contrast those. However, at a cost of $20+ for them, and with added functionality such as brightness levels, strobe features and so on, I don’t really consider them in the same class as cheap disposables. I plan to pick up some of these heavy-duty electronic glow sticks though... I think I’m addicted to light emitting objects... LOL

The Garrity Fun-Tastick Glo Lite floated when I tested it in water, but noticed after submerging it for a while that the tube allowed a little water in through the end cap. However, this didn’t short out the light

When I’ve burnt this one out, I’ll make a hardcore attempt to break it open and yet leave it intact in an attempt to change the batteries. If that fails, I may rig something up so that I can attach my Ritter Photon to it... For S&Gs... LOL

I just read a review on Flashlight Reviews in which they mention that once the batteries have gone dead in the of the Garrity Fun-Tastick Glo Lite the diffuser tube can be pulled off and will fit tightly over an Arc AAA flashlight and can be removed again easily.

They also mention that the Garrity Glo Lite is brighter than chemical light sticks.

Cool item, I'll check out my local store for them...

Garrity says "reusable" probably means you can turn it on & off "battery operated" what type of battery ??? Can't find the info , it's sometimes cheaper to throw out & buy new than replace the battery!

Contained within the light are 3 Button Cells that are approximately 15mm in diameter by 5mm tall.

Wow. You've just convinced me to get the Arc I've been thinking about and the Glo Lite at the same time! (my wife thanks you for causing me financial harm, but she just doesn't know it yet.

Which department has the light, as I haven't seen these? Sometimes they put stuff on end caps away from designated areas. I've been in camping, flashlights, and electronics recently and don't recall these, but they look spiffy. My kid will love them, I'm sure.

Cool Beans on the Arc. I want one of those myself. Every time I have the extra cash and go to Arc's site, they seem to be on pre-order. Is that standard? Perhaps I should just order one and find out.

I found the Garrity Fun-Tastick Glo Lites in the flashlight section on the bottom of the main rack. I would have missed them if I hadn't knocked another flashlight off the pin as I was flipping through them looking for a particular color. As I bent down to pick up the light I knocked off the Glo Lites were staring me in the face.

It's amazing how I tend to overlook cheesy packaging... My graphic design job has locked me into a certain type of design snobbery I guess. LOL

"Honey, I'm going for groceries... I'll be back in an hour." Think that will work?

Oh, and I'm going to find out about the pre-order. Putting it in today. :-)

Look what I found at the store, hon! LOL

Cool Beans. Let me know what the order status on the Arc AAA is. On the site it says 4 weeks from time of order. I can't handle that kind of wait. I'm so impatient. LOL

The GloLite is OK, but it really needs to be babied. I had one split in half in my pocket onces.

It is brighter than a Krill Lamp, though.

Ah yes. I should have noted that though I tossed it around, and down the flight of stairs out front, that it doesn't look to be capable of withstanding much crushing pressure.

Good info!

Thanks

I just order things like that and ignore it. When they come, it's a nice surprise in the mailbox.

The Garrity FunTastik's are reuseable. Fair warning: this will take time! Buy or borrow some nail polish remover or some other acetone based product. Take a Q-Tip dipped in acetone and rub it into the crack's where it is glued together. This will be where the tube meets the LED assembly and where the threaded part of LED assembly & switch is located. Carefully work the tube bending it until you start to hear cracking. Hopefully the cracking will be the glue as it comes apart. Twist the threaded end holding the batteries until it unscrews. Take a Q-tip, pen, or whatever is handy and gently push on the LED until the LED assembly comes out of it's housing.

Wah-lah, reuseable led light for under $3. I've only done this to 2 so far. The first one came apart with out a hitch, the 2nd one the threaded piece would not fit back on properly. Couldn't figure out why, but it would just keep rotating. At least it's good for parts and another set of batteries.

Someone mentioned the Review from Flashlight review. It's a couple of years out of date.

The reason I bought these was for Astronomy purposes. The Red LED's are too bright for that use, but it's still useable in case of an emergency at night! Hmm now that I think about it I probably could get a less bright Red LED and put it in the stik.

Re: Garrity Glo Lite - 02/09/06 02:13 AM

The deal is that they have a wait list. I ordered my Arc on December 19, 2005 and received it last week, February 1, 2006. So that is 6 week wait. The sooner you order the sooner it will arrive!

Re: Garrity Glo Lite - 03/18/06 01:39 PM

I have found a better version of the Funtastik.

Good 'ol Brigade Quartermasters has a 3 pack of LED sticks for $7.99. They are made to come apart and have replaceable parts. I bought a pack of them last week and was very happy to find out they lived up to the description. Unlike the Garrity lights these do not have a lanyard and the switch keeps rotating instead of having to turn one way and then the other.

I definitely like these better.
