Bulk water storage container

I had an emergency preparedness magazine that had an ad for a company called In Case Of. They were located (according to the ad) at www.incaseof.com. I've recently tried to go there and...no luck.

The company had for sale water containers. FDA approved. They had 250 or 500 gallons and had standard 'hose' spigots. They were also narrow enough to fit through a standard doorway.

Does anyone know what happened to them? Does anyone know if they are still in business? I know there are other companies that have other solutions, but I was just impressed with how these were presented and would like to find them again if I can.

I found references to the site by going through google's "groups" search. The company was apparently located in Alberta (Canada). So even if they were still around, shipping might be a bit much.

One thing I discovered, quite by accident, was how difficult large containers can be to clean, fill and use. You can't beat 'em for efficiency (gallons per cubic foot), but they aren't better than small containers in all respects. Also hard to move 'em if you have to bug out. Something to think about, anyway.

I'm not thinking so much about 'potable water'. More of a personal hygene, flush the toilet type of bulk storage thing. We have cases of bottled...the family drinks it regularly so rotation is not a problem and the RO can make more than enough for drinking. It's more for the 'other' uses.

You can google as well as I can, so you've probably already seen this, but they have a great selection of tanks... Never done business with 'em, but I might after seeing all this...

Yes I did see them and although there are some very good products out there, there was just something about the In Case Of that impressed me. One of which was the fact that you could store 500 gallons in about 8 sq ft. and even get it inside the house (albeit with difficulty when full) through a standard door. I am however still looking and do appreciate the information...that's why I asked.

Figure water at 8.3 lb / gal. 500 gallons is 4150 pounds. Over two tons. That's over 500 lbs per square foot, assuming 8 square feet foot print. "Some difficulty"? You sir, I shall address as Mister CJK from now on. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Me too Wow. I moved into an office in a class "A" office building that had a funny floor in an inside room. Turned out it had a 10g steel plate under it. The room had been used to house a high density file system, and the floors were only rated for 150# sq/ft, so thry had put in the plate to distribute the load.

There is also the legendary story of the San Antonio law firm that moved all their legal books into their brand newly renovated second floor library. Whe they got there Sunday morning to finich unpacking, the library was in the first floor garage. No lawer jokes, please.

At 4000+ pounds he may be storing these containers in his basement - whether planned or not (crunch!). <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I think the idea of that indoor tank is you bring it in the house THEN fill it from a hose. Here's a 300 gallon version:

For the non-drinking purposes you describe I think I'd go for rain barrels (collect rainwater runoff from your roof). You can use that water for such purposes (plus lawn watering, etc.) regularly and cut your water consumption considerably, plus you always then have a supply on hand.

Or if you have an in-ground swimming pool...

You could use a pump setup to avoid driving around the house with a forktruck. Buy the 500gal tank & keep it in the cellar. Then get a well pump & pressure tank. The well pump will pump water from the storage tank ( it won't know that it is not hooked up to a well, unless you tell it!) into the pressure tank. You just have to have a check valve between your place & street water, & a valve to connect the pressure tank to your house piping. A generator to run your pump, furnace & refrigerator is not a bad idea, either. I have a friend with this setup & it works fine.

We are building a new home this fall, on the property I will have a cistern buried in the ground. It will be filled from the gutters, city water supply & other sources as needed. Can supply the household with all its water needs other than potable.
