Metal Band-Aid box as psk container - 05/20/05 03:44 AM

If I remember right, they where used by the boy scouts years ago. I found them at walgreens. Any pro's or con's to use them?

The #1 criteria for a kit container is get it, fill it, carry it. Altoid and tobacco tins are used because they are readily available and inexpensive , as is a bandaid tin. You will want to seal it with a quality tape. If you get the upright model it may be more problematic packing and accessing the contents. But again, do it. You'll likely as not wind up finding more container prospects later.

On a related note, seems like a tupperware contaner would be great --cheap, light, waterproof and available in a wide variety of sizes. TRO

Remember it's all about the size. Bigger the box less chances are that you will have it on you when needed. Altoids tins were prefered because they had a low profile. Round tobacco tins were good as well but they were bigger althou round shape made them fit better. Also tobacco tins already came with a moisture seal strip so they were sort of waterproof. Otter boxes were great but thick walls made a container lil bulky and you didn't really got that much more of the space inside. If you find something that fits you than by all means go for it. Just remember to have it on you. Biggest disadvantage of tins like bandaids or altoids is that they are not really waterproof and when I carried mine I used it so frequently that the hinges were getting bent out of shape and I had to fix them all the time. I reevaluated my everyday carry needs as far as the psk goes and now I mostly carry stuff in small ziploc biohazard bags from the hospital. I really don't need fishing hooks, water purification tablets in the city and fire starting methods are kind of limited. My PSK is designed more to be a FAK, keep me dry and comfortable and all that fits into a clear plastic bag. It also alows me to see better what's inside as well. But mind you my search for perfect PSK container is far from over.

Question is:
Is PSK still a PSK if not on your body but in your backpack?
