Alternatives to Altoid tin

Having just sanded and polished an Altoids tin for use as a PSK, I began thinking what else would work for this and poked around for alternatives. I found that a small size Pelican case would work, as would the plastic case that a Fisher Space Pen (bullet) came in. You know, once you get started, it's actually quite fun to try to find good PSK containers.

Plastic soap holders are available in various sizes.

I am toying with a medium size Metamucil container (I am not a fan of overly small containers like the Altoid tins.) that is tall which would be ideal for fixed blade knives and saw blades.

Others on this site have suggested chewing tobacco containers.

I use the normal Altoids tin for my pocket carry kit. I also keep more in my pack when hiking. I've been using WalMart plastic soap containers (two of them) for that. Those pack-based kits contain mostly redundant stuff from the Altoids kit - just bigger and better. A full sized firesteel, a real signal mirror, 3-1/2" (?) lockback folder, bigger compas, etc. Never being satisfied, I am currently in the process of replacing those two soap holders with a 32oz Nalgene water bottle kit. Holds even more, is waterprrof, and I found this neat little metal cup at EMS that is designed to slip right over the end of that water bottle. I've been looking for a good way to carry something to boil water in, and something to hold collected water in the first place. Two problems solved with the Nalgene kit. It's bigger or course, but I easily have the room in my packs to carry it or lash it on.

They sure give you a hard time. I use my "snuff" cans for carrying cotton-vaseline balls, cleaning pouches/caps for muzzleloader, fishing tackle, etc. I have thought about using a round altoids tin for tobacco to keep people from saying anything about that circle in my pocket.

They do still come in those great little (well not so little) tins. I love those things so much that when I sold the lighter I kept the tin! <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Great siz fot a kits slightly larger than an altoids kit.

I also scouted around for a "Trangia Mess Tin", but didn't end up buying one. Definitely too big for a pocket kit, but maybe OK for one inside your pack. As I mentioned above regarding the Nalgene bottle/cup thing, my quest was mostly to find something that I could use to carry collected water, and boil it.

I use a shoe polish container. I find that a coiled wire saw, coiled wire, and coiled fishing line fit nicely around the edge, and the center space is available for the rest of the goodies.
