First of all, welcome to the forums. A hint to using the forums, try and use the subject of your post/question in the title of your post, as you will likely generate a greater number of answers. You might want to edit this post and include your question in the title.

A good post title can help us all find it again if it generates some good information. We could do a search on "compass", but would have to wade through a lot of stuff to find it.

There are a lot of knowledgeable people here, and they contribute info you've never heard of!

The link to camp Canada had the most common methods. Most of us on this list will never have to resort to that because we will have one (or two) with us. The waist belt on my every day around town bag, hiking, climbing bag has a full-blown Suunto MC-1G mounted on it all the time with a Silva type #27 living in my FAK both have mirrors on them for sighting and signaling etc.
