Protecting a signal mirror

I found a pretty good way to protect the mirror in my wilderness PSK.

I scratched the screen up on my old PDA pretty badly. When I got my new PDA, I discovered that they make little screen protectors that just stick to the screen. When I went to get the screen protector, I discovered that they would not sell me just one. I had to buy a package of 12 for $20. Well the one I put on my PDA works very well so I tried it on my mirror and it sticks there very well too and prevents scratches.

I don't know that it would stay on if you were carrying the mirror on a lanyard or something. My mirror resides in a tin and this protects it there. These things are about 3 inches by 3.5 inches s they fit my little 2 by 3 mirror with room to spare. Might try multiple protectors on a bigger mirror.

I need to start one on fire and see if it will work as tinder (I suspect it will).

DON'T BE SO QUICK TO GIVE THOSE PROTECTORS AWAY. FROM EXPERIENCE I CAN TELL YOU THEY ARE ONLY GOOD FOR ABOUT A MONTH ( THATS WHY THEY COME IN PACKS OF 12) THEY WILL GET VERY SCRATCHED UP IN A SHORT TIME. THEY TAKE THE ABUSE YOUR PDA WOULD TAKE OTHERWISE.

Cut him a little slack as he may have vision problems and does not like to use glasses.

Right now I have three pairs of glasses at my computer table.

One pair for when I use the monitor, I believe they are 2X.

One pair for close work and reading, I believe they are 2.75X

One pair prescription bifocals, the lenses for distance does not work well with the monitor although the bifocal works for reading.

The first (2) cost me $.99 apiece and the prescription cost me $85.00., and all three of them are large and geeky looking (Don"t care.).

Some people have vision problems WITH glasses.

Caps are kind of hard for me to read, but if someone is offering information, as far as I'm concerned, they can print it out in ancient Egyptian (got a translator site for that!). <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

sorry i was being rude. i have been reading posts on this forum for about 6 months and thought the idea was to share ideas and information. i will try to be more considerate in the future (i used all lower case letters this time so you know i'm not yelling)

Checked it out last night. Does not burn <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. Will not work as tinder <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Still keeps mirror from scratching <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.

One easy way to do that is to write it in Word using any size font you want and then cut and paste it into the forum. Plus it gives you a spell check which improves my ability to communicate some.

You could try Glad Press & Seal food wrap. It's slightly sticky on one side, easy on & off, can be reused as long as you keep dirt & grease off the sticky side.

No good as tinder though, some kind of plastic.

I have wrapped mirrors in Saran Wrap and, with a bit of tape to hold it in place, it worked OK. I have not tried the PDA screen protectors nor have I used the tape mentioned at the following URL: http://modena.intergate.ca/personal/wired/Pilot/screen_save.html . Although I did not read the web page closely, note the warning about NOT pulling the tape straight up.

I have a nifty military, new style signal mirror. It floats, is made of acylic and has a peel off protector that stays attached and can be stuck back on. Very well designed. I do not know of a source without enlisting and getting in the right career field! I will look around the net and see if anyone sells them. Cheers <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The NSN is 6350-00-105-1252 made in 1986 by the School of Survival Specialties in Spokane, WA. I went to their website and all they sold was starflash mirrors. I guess mine is an antique now! It has a vinyl sheet that covers the mirror surface, it peels off and sticks back on when you are done with it. Too bad they seem to be extinct! Cheers!

I used to protect my StarFlash (2x3) with a piece of paper over the front, then the whole mess wrapped with masking tape.

I just recently found that this smaller StarFlash fits perfectly in the photo/credit card holders you find in wallets. Buy a refill of those photo holders and you can tear individual "pockets" off of the thing similar to ripping off a yellow sticky note from its pad (tear carefully, however).

I just thought of another option- collectible card protectors. Go to any place that sells things like Magic the Gathering and/or Yu-Gi-Oh, they should have some. They're about the size of a playing card.
