Becker knife sheath storage: ideas wanted

Becker knife sheath storage: ideas wanted - 02/08/05 09:48 PM

I just ordered a BK7 Utility and a BK10 Crewman and would like to hear ideas on what to carry in the sheath from folks who have one or the other. I am hoping to make one of these my primary hunting/survival knife and I am especially interested in items that are outdoors related.

Thanks, Vince

I have the BK7 and my pouch will fit an Altoids tin PLUS a full bottle of Potable Aqua. I was also able to slip a 2x3 signal mirror behind the plastic knife insert (on the back side of the sheath) and a half liter plastic water pouch (not a milk bag but similar).

I have actually never completly finished the Altoids tin kit, but the usual suspects are in there.

I keep this knife in my car kit. It is a good value I think for the money. I have seen someone post a kit stored under the plastic knife scales but I have never gone that far.

I am looking at the Crewman with the same idea, time to upgarde. I was wondering how much the sheath would hold and was looking at sheaths from www.specopsbrand.com.
I think I'd start with a small sharpening device and add things that didn't fit in the PSK like a real signal mirror, Allway tool FS 2 saw, bottle of water puri tabs and then backup fire making and maybe a small AA or AAA flashlight..Should be able to wrap some 550 cord etc around the sheath.

I fit a Princeton Tec Attitude LED Flashlight and a Doan's Magnesium Firestarter in my BK7 pouch.

Schwert, you fit an Altoids tin in the sharpening stone pouch? Is it a full size Altoids tin?

Re: Becker knife sheath storage: ideas wanted - 02/09/05 02:44 AM

I tied three of those Chris Reeve knuse knots to my sheath/knife. Behing the kydex insert I managed to fit about another 10 to 12 feet of paracord, a magnesium bar, part of a broken knife sharpener, and a straight allen wrend used for opening the handle.

Inside the hande I have one scapel (kinda overkill but oh well), 4 sparklite tinder, a sparklite type firestarter, 2 fishhook, 1 small sinker, and about 10 to 20 feet of braided fishing line.....oh and a needle and some thread.

I would suggest making a small kit in the handle, could come in handy if all else is lost.

Oh right, I'm talking about the BK7.

Yeah my sheath pouch will take a full-size Altoids tin plus the bottle. It is a very tight squeeze but it goes.

I bought mine a couple of years ago, so maybe they changed the sheath supplier, but mine has a gusseted pouch with an elastic band across it and a velcro flap.

This image which is not very good has the Becker in the background with the pouched stuffed with the tin.

"I would suggest making a small kit in the handle, could come in handy if all else is lost."

I had forgotten that people take the handles off. I too like the idea of having the basics, especially fire, even if you lose your main kit. The allen wrench could pull double duty as a ferro striker perhaps.

"I was also able to slip a 2x3 signal mirror behind the plastic knife insert (on the back side of the sheath)..."

Was this one of the Starflash mirrors? It would be great if I could fit one of those plus one of those flat Jetscream whistles back there as well.

Rather then spend $49.99 for the sheath, buy yourself a bag of 100 marbles for 1 or 2 dollars, and throw the marbles away.

Fill the bag with your minimum necessacities, run your belt thru the closing line, and Ranger band the bag to to the front or rear edge of your existing sheath. You will save $48.99 or $47.99 and be able to put more into the marble bag which will be Ranger banded to the sheath. Dig up another $15.00+ dollars to buy a full size Ka-Bar as a backup, which while no longer state of the art in blades is still a knife to reckon with and depend on and your current Becker knife sheath will not look any more obtrusive than one with a baggy sheath pocket.

Actually, in my circles I am known as a rather tight man with a dollar. If I am going to spend $49.99 on a sheath you can damn well bet it will come with a big 'ole knife stuffed into it! In fact, I probably wouldn't even throw away those marbles. I would think of a use for them--slingshot ammo maybe.

Norad45:

I thought the sheath everyone is posting about cost $49.99 by itself with no knife included!

Re: Becker knife sheath storage: ideas wanted - 02/09/05 06:38 PM

Yes, I put my starflash mirror behind the plastic insert. I left it in its plastic bag to mimimize scratches. I had stuffed a bit of paracord back there also, but removed it in favor of the water bag. I bet a JetScream would fit back there but I do not have one. I do have a flat ACR whiste in the tin, but I know it would fit along with the mirror and water bag.

Also my $49.99 sheath came with the 7" Becker...made the sheath a much better bargain.

Re: Becker knife sheath storage: ideas wanted - 02/09/05 06:44 PM

My Sheath pouch contains a slim perspex case (originally containing a bicycles puncture repair kit!), a good tight coil of strong nylon cord & a mini LED torch.
The perpex case contains, spark-rite, vaseline/cotton balls, scalpel, puritabs, bic lighter, 25metres dental floss, fishing kit, sewing kit, tyre patch glue, button compass, slim (homemade!) mirror, lens, magic birthday cake candle. I can just about slide a space blanket behind all the kit in the pouch, and I have about 10ft of paracord wrapped around the base of the sheath, too.
I havent put anything inside the handle as yet, but it will probably be more firestarting "stuff"!

Im working on a pouch to go on my battle rat when it arrives, made from a Garmin GPS pouch, I believe the pouch is virtually identical to the BK & T sheath.
A British Army magazine pouch (holds two SA80/M16 mags!) also fits quite nicely on the front of the sheath, though it IS a little on the large side!

BTW Here is an old post I did when I bought my Becker. Overall I still agree with my observations at that time. This knife is currenlty in my car kit and probably will remain there indefinately.

No, the Becker sheaths include some rather decent-looking knives as well:

Norad45:

Sorry, I got sidetracked by a site that was selling various sheaths.

Nice lookiing Crew Man and Combat blades, but I tend to be more traditional in my design tastes. If I go with a blade bigger than my Craftsman, or Kalishnakov bayonet, it will probably be a Ka-Bar.

Re: Becker sheath storage-thanks for the ideas! - 02/10/05 02:52 PM

I think I will try to go with the following, depending of course on space:

Behind the insert:
Starflash mirror
Jetscream whistle
2- 4”X 6” Heavy duty Ziplocks or milkbags

In the pouch:
Paracord
Mini-Bic lighter
Blastmatch, metal match, or ferro rod
Wetfire tinder
2- 4”X 6” Heavy duty Ziplocks
Repackaged Potable Aqua (or I may finally try out the Chlorine tabs)
Allen wrench

In the handle:
Fishing kit and snare wire (both currently residing in my PSK)
Sparklite and tinder

With the exception of the fishing kit and snare wire, this will all duplicate stuff that I always carry in my wilderness PSK.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions, especially Schwert and dchinell for the links to that "SASS" page--I have bookmarked it for future reference.

Re: Becker sheath questions, Part 2 - 02/15/05 03:43 PM

Those of you with the Beckers, did the sheath come with an elastic web strap around the pouch? I'm thinking about cutting it off but I don't want to create a clumsy-looking mess. Did you cut yours and if so, will ranger bands work to hold everything in place?

Thanks, Vince

Re: Becker sheath questions, Part 2 - 02/15/05 06:32 PM

Mine came with an elastic band. I have not removed it, but if you did I cannot see why a ranger band would not work to hold the pouch contents stable.

Re: Becker sheath questions, Part 2 - 02/15/05 08:57 PM

I should have looked a little more closely. With a little effort I was able to slip the elastic web up and over the velcro pouch cover so no cutting was necessary, and it is still there should it be needed.
