Re: Underwear as Survival Signal - 01/12/05 08:29 PM

According to the original article in nwaonline.net, he made several mistakes. 1. No compass or emergency gear 2. hunting alone even though his friends were not very far off. 3. panicking and taking off in unknown direction. Apparently he wandered for 3-4 hours. The only smart things he did was the underwear and finally finding a dry spot to stop on.

A friend was reading the last article over my shoulder. She said a white D-cup bra probably would have attracted attention quicker. <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I would have to agree with that. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: Underwear as Survival Signal - 01/13/05 06:12 PM

Interesting

I think I'll keep my underwear where it belongs <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Besides, after a disaster I can't garuntee that it will still be the right color for signalling <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I carry around an international orange hankerchief for that reason though.

Matt,

I can't believe you actually took the time to lay out your skivvies so nicely. My favorites are the penguins and the hula lady. Do you ever make her dance?

Re: Underwear as Survival Signal - 01/13/05 06:35 PM

In an emergency I plan on setting mine on fire; I figure after wearing them for a couple of weeks in the mountains, the resulting column of smoke should be readily visible to any passing airliner. <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Re: Underwear as Survival Signal - 01/14/05 12:30 AM

I think there is a notion that hunters are adept out in the woods.

In my own experience, I've encountered quite a few who are clueless dolts. Many of them see their annual hunting trip as an excuse to get away from the old lady, drink a lot of beer and shoot at anything that moves. They are often times any thing but experienced outdoorsmen.

When I was living up north I helped out on two occasions in searching for lost/missing hunters. One gentleman had tumbled down a small hill and busted his ankle in the process. He'd been drinking of course. No map, no compass, no real survival gear save for some paper matches. I ended up going back for help because there was no way I was going to be able to haul his 300+ pound out of shape ass out of the woods by my self.

Re: Underwear as Survival Signal - 01/14/05 12:35 AM

I read that article, it's amazing how many people go out without the most basic of items. I'm surprised that a hunter would go out without any blaze orange clothing, for example. On a lot of camo jackets and pants, the liners are blaze orange, so you can turn them inside out for visibility. Not that you wear it that way when you're concealed, but, most people wear something orange, especially on their way back out after hunting, so they are not mistaken for a "target". If nothing else, I always have a blaze watch cap in my backpack or in a pocket when I go out during hunting season. Of course, this guy didn't have a compass, flashlight, firestarter, anything...(well, he had a weapon I guess)

I don't hunt... but if I did, I've decided there is no way I'd leave without a decent PSK and first aid kit. There's just no excuse.

Yes, that is the eternal question: "does my underwear attract attention because of the color, or the odor?!". <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Where's the pair with the survival tips, morse code, knots and edible plants imprinted on them? I want the link to Matt's BVD Cheat Sheet!

Of course, I can see the next headline:

Willie, you might have something there! True Survival-Wear... But I'd print it on a shirt or something. People are funny about guys wandering around without their shorts. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Polak187:

Did you cut slots in the back end so that when you rotate them, you don't have to pull the leg part up to take care of business? <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Billvann:

If they are brief(s), it shouldn't take long to read them.

If they are boxers, he might end up a little punch drunk.

If they are speedo's, he would probably be tired from running.

If they are thongs, he would probably be really strung out.

It all depends on your prespective.

Re: My EDC - 01/15/05 01:06 PM

And I thought you guys will start cracking polish jokes about underwear...

Re: My EDC - 01/15/05 05:42 PM

Polak187:

You don't have to be Polish to run to the latrine and find you have put on your underwear backwards.

The suddenly frantic pulling and searching you have to do makes the guys in the adjoining stalls move away from you if not out of the restroom completely.

Been there, done that!
