Micro Radios?

Micro Radios? - 10/07/04 01:45 AM

I was searching for a radio I used to own once upon a time. It was tiny, but I don't remember the name nor brand. It was nothing more than one ear-bud and a small rectangular box attached, with various antenna sizes, and was equipped with volume and scan, and nothing more.

I've since lost it, but I haven't ever been able to find one again. All stores and google searches for "smallest radio" and "micro radio" and countless other variations come up failures. These so called smallest radios were huge in comparison.

There was one that caught my eye as a possible alternative though. It was about the size of a swiss card, is called "slim gym" and is marketed for people at the gym obviously.

Anyone have any experience with these? I wonder if they're any good

A loooong time ago there were several posts regarding tiny radios. One I remember was the . Sinclair Z1 AM Radio

Sir Clive Sinclair also invented the X1 Button Radio for the FM band. But it looks as if it's no longer available. I sent them an email to their customer service department asking about availability in the US. You can order the Z1 online on their website.

I love the mini am/fm I got from countycomm. Best $7 I have spent in a while.

The CC is a good value but a long way from the smallest possible radio. I haven't seen that card thing but it looks cute. I'd personally just go for "cheap". Walgreens has a number of junky fm-only pushbutton radios and the guts are on a small circuit board. I got a pair of them (2 for $5.00) that run on two AAA cells. Each is around 2x the size of the 2AAA battery compartment. You could probably hack off the battery compartment or even pry out the circuit board, and run it on a CR2032 coin cell. They have another one that looks like a carabiner and that runs on two button cells. Again, you could hack away the useless parts of that radio and what's left over would be pretty small. These are all earbud radios with stereo earbuds. You can separate the two wires, so two people can listen at the same time; or you can throw away one half to make the earphone stow smaller. Whatever you do will probably be overlarge for an Altoids kit, but pretty small in a bigger kit.

There was also a CPF thread a while back about micro radios, though most of the ones mentioned weren't this small.

Checking ebay, I see there are some other small earphone radios (coin cell), try searching on "tiny tunes" or "tiny toonz".

That's pretty cool. I would love to have one even smaller. I like the idea of modifying to run on a coin cell and hacking off the extraneous parts. Sounds like a fun project for me. The only problem is that I need AM and FM. I really prefer to have Wx band too but I am willing to sacrifice that as long as I have both AM and FM.

May want to try this one on for size. I have one of these in my survival gear and there is no problem with the tuning (no dials). I found this by going to Google and typing Brunton.
I do not have any association with this company. Hope this helps!

Check out eBay... search on TINY RADIO. They've got some right now for a buck each, 100 available, FM only, plus other kinds, too.
